Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Screen Replacement

This guide is for replacing only the screen; if your screen comes pre-installed in a new frame, refer to a different procedure.

  • Ensure you have the correct replacement screen part.
  • Discharge the battery below 25% to prevent accidental puncture and explosion risk.

If your battery is swollen, take necessary precautions before disassembling the device.

  • Purchase a set of replacement adhesives for both the back cover and screen.

Step 1 | Eject the SIM card tray

  • Insert a SIM eject tool, SIM eject bit, or straightened paper clip into the SIM tray hole at the left edge of the phone.
  • Press directly into the hole to avoid damaging the phone.

  • Remove the ejected SIM card tray.

Step 2 | Heat the back cover

Step 2 image

Release the plastic clips holding the back cover in place with moderate force.

Be cautious of applying excessive force that may damage the device.

  • Prepare an iOpener and apply it to the back cover for at least two minutes to loosen the adhesive underneath.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but avoid overheating the phone to prevent display and internal battery damage.

Step 3 | Insert an opening pick

Secure a suction handle to the screen's bottom edge, as close to the edge as possible.

  • If the screen is cracked, try lifting with strong tape or superglueing the suction handle for better adhesion.
  • Lift the phone assembly with the suction handle to create a small gap between the assembly and the back cover.

Be cautious not to overheat; follow iOpener instructions carefully.

  • Insert an opening pick at a steep angle into the created gap. You may need to apply some force.
  • Slide the opening pick to the bottom right corner to slice the adhesive and release the plastic clips holding the back cover in place.

Step 4 | Release the plastic clips and slice the adhesive

Step 4 image

Insert a second opening pick at the bottom edge, angled steeply.

  • Slide this pick towards the bottom left corner to release plastic clips and cut adhesive.
  • Leave both opening picks in place to prevent adhesive reseal.

Adhesive may cool down, causing difficulties cutting.

  • Reheat the adhesive using an iOpener.
  • Insert a third opening pick at a steep angle in the bottom left corner.
  • Slide the pick along the phone's left edge to release plastic clips and slice adhesive.
  • Leave the pick in place near the top left corner to prevent resealing.

  • Slide the pick along the right edge to release plastic clips and cut adhesive.
  • Leave the pick in the top right corner to prevent re-adhesion.

Do not attempt to separate the phone assembly from the back cover now, as the fingerprint cable remains connected to the motherboard.

Flip your Redmi Note 9 over.

Be careful not to strain the fingerprint flex cable during the following steps.

  • Fold the back cover to the right side of the phone assembly, as you would open a book from the back.
  • Slide the back cover underneath the phone assembly, ensuring that it overlaps about one third of the back cover without straining the fingerprint cable.

Step 8 | Unfasten the motherboard cover screws

Remove the motherboard cover using an 11-point Phillips screwdriver.

  • There are eleven screws in total.
  • The screws are 3.9 mm long and have a Phillips head.

Warm the screen by letting it sit for a few minutes.

A badly cracked screen may require clear packing tape or strong tape to ensure the suction cup adheres.

As a last resort, superglue can be used to secure the suction cup in place.

  • Apply the suction cup to the bottom edge of the screen and lift it using the handle to create a small gap.
  • Insert an iFlex into the gap between the midframe and the screen.

Step 18 | Insert an opening pick

  • Slide the pick to the bottom left corner of the screen to slice its adhesive.
  • Leave the pick in place to prevent resealing.
  • Remove the iFlex.

Step 19 | Slice the adhesive

Check that the iOpener or heat gun is still warm and reheat it for 1-2 minutes if necessary.

  • Insert an opening pick at the bottom left corner of the screen.
  • Slide the pick along the left edge to slice the adhesive. Leave it in place at the top left corner.
  • When near the front facing camera, insert only a short tip (about 3-4 mm) to avoid damage or smudging.

Thread the display flex cable through the gap in the midframe.

Remove the screen.

  • Compare your new replacement part to the original part and transfer any remaining components as needed.
