Locate the SIM tray at the left edge of the phone.

  • Insert a SIM eject tool, SIM eject bit, or straightened paper clip into the hole on the SIM tray.
  • Press directly into the hole to eject the SIM card tray.
  • Remove the ejected SIM card tray.

Step 2 | Heat the back cover

Step 2 image

Be cautious of overheating as the display and internal battery can be damaged.

  • Prepare an iOpener and apply it to the back cover for at least two minutes to loosen the adhesive.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but avoid overexposure which may cause heat damage.

Use sufficient force to release the plastic clips holding the back cover in place.

Step 3 | Insert an opening pick

Secure a suction handle to the screen's bottom edge, as close to the edge as possible.

  • If the screen is cracked, try lifting it with strong tape or superglue the suction handle in place for better adhesion.
  • Lift the screen and phone assembly with the suction handle, creating a small gap between the assembly and the back cover.

Apply more heat to soften adhesive if needed, following iOpener instructions to avoid overheating.

  • Insert an opening pick at a steep angle into the created gap, applying some force as necessary.
  • Slide the opening pick to the bottom right corner to slice the adhesive and release plastic clips holding the back cover in place.

Step 4 | Release the plastic clips and slice the adhesive

Insert a second opening pick into the bottom edge at an angle.

  • Slide it towards the left corner to release plastic clips and cut adhesive.
  • Leave the picks in place to prevent resealing of adhesive.

Check if adhesive has cooled down.

  • If so, use iOpener to reheat it.
  • Slide the bottom left opening pick along the left edge to release plastic clips and slice adhesive.
  • Leave the pick in top left corner to prevent resealing.

Slide the opening pick along the right edge of your phone to release the plastic clips and slice the adhesive.

Do not separate the phone assembly from the back cover all the way yet, as the fingerprint reader is still adhered to the back cover.

  • Leave the opening pick in the top right corner to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Step 7 | Heat the fingerprint reader

Step 7 image

Apply iOpener to the back cover near the fingerprint reader for 2 minutes.

Be careful not to apply too much heat, which may damage surrounding components.

Step 8 | Remove the back cover

Be careful when handling the fingerprint reader to avoid damaging it.

  • Lift the back cover upwards while pressing down on the fingerprint reader with a finger.
  • The fingerprint reader should detach from the back cover.

If adhesive is too strong, apply heated iOpener to fingerprint reader for 1-2 minutes.

  • Remove back cover.
  • Install new back cover with pre-cut adhesive or double-sided adhesive tape.
  • Apply new adhesive to back cover, not phone frame.
  • After installation, apply strong pressure to phone for several minutes; a stack of heavy books can help.

Step 9 | Heat the back cover

Step 9 image

Apply an iOpener to the back cover near the former fingerprint reader location for 2 minutes.

  • The iOpener should loosen the adhesive under the NFC antenna and its protective foil.

Step 10 | Loosen the graphite foil

Beware of the adhesive — risk of damage or tears.

  • Insert an opening pick under the right edge of the NFC antenna's graphite foil.
  • Pull the graphite foil upwards with the pick to loosen it from the back cover.
  • If reusing, use your iOpener to heat and soften the adhesive as needed.

Step 11 | Remove the graphite foil

Remove graphite foil.

Step 12 | Loosen the NFC antenna

Adhesive under NFC antenna may be too cool to peel off.

  • Reapply iOpener to reheat adhesive for easier removal.

Now, carefully slide opening pick tip underneath NFC antenna and separate it from back cover as previously done for removing protective foil.

Step 13 | Remove the NFC antenna

  • Remove the NFC antenna.
  • Apply gentle heat to the old NFC antenna using an iOpener for 1 minute when transferring it to the new back cover.

  • Compare your new replacement part with the original and transfer any necessary components from the old back cover.

Clean the relevant areas of the phone assembly with isopropyl alcohol (>90%) before applying new adhesive.

  • Secure the new back cover using pre-cut adhesive or double-sided tape, ensuring it adheres to the back cover and not the frame.
  • Apply steady pressure to your phone for several minutes after installing the back cover to form a strong bond. A stack of heavy books can provide sufficient pressure.
