Insert a SIM eject tool, SIM eject bit, or a straightened paper clip into the hole on the SIM tray located at the left edge of the phone.

Press directly into the hole, as excessive force may damage the SIM tray — risk of mechanical failure.

  • Remove the ejected SIM card tray.

Step 2 | Heat the back cover

Step 2 image

Remove the back cover by first releasing the plastic clips using a firm grip.

  • Prepare an iOpener and apply it to the back cover for at least two minutes to loosen the adhesive underneath.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate – but be cautious not to overheat, as this can damage the display and internal battery.

Step 3 | Insert an opening pick

Secure a suction handle to the bottom edge of the screen, as close as possible.

  • If the screen is cracked, try lifting with strong tape or superglueing the suction handle for better grip.
  • Lift the screen and phone assembly with the suction handle, creating a small gap between the assembly and back cover.

In case of trouble creating a gap, apply more heat to soften adhesive, but be careful not to overheat (see iOpener instructions).

  • Insert an opening pick in a steep angle into the created gap, requiring some force.
  • Slide the pick to the bottom right corner to slice adhesive and release plastic clips holding the back cover in place.

Step 4 | Release the plastic clips and slice the adhesive

Insert the second opening pick at a steep angle near the bottom edge of your phone.

  • Slide the pick towards the bottom left corner to release the plastic clips and cut through the adhesive.
  • Leave both picks in place to prevent resealing of the adhesive.

Step 5 | Release the plastic clips and slice the adhesive

Hard-to-cut adhesive is a sign that the iOpener has cooled down.

  • Reheat the adhesive with your iOpener.
  • Slide an opening pick along the left edge of your phone to release plastic clips and slice the adhesive.
  • Leave this pick in place at the top left corner to prevent resealing.

Step 6

Slide the bottom right opening pick along the right edge of your phone to release plastic clips and slice adhesive.

Do not separate the phone assembly from the back cover yet — fingerprint reader is still attached.

  • Leave the opening pick in the top right corner to prevent adhesive resealing.

Step 7 | Heat the fingerprint reader

Step 7 image

Apply iOpener to the back cover near the fingerprint reader for 2 minutes.

  • Heat will loosen the adhesive underneath.

Step 8 | Remove the back cover

Fingerprints may remain on old back cover during removal.

  • Lift the back cover upwards while pressing down the fingerprint reader with a finger.
  • The fingerprint reader should separate from the back cover.
  • If adhesive is strong, reapply heated iOpener for 1-2 minutes to loosen further.

Avoid applying new adhesive to phone frame.

  • Secure new back cover with pre-cut adhesive or double-sided tape.
  • Apply strong, steady pressure to phone for several minutes to ensure good bond.
  • To aid bonding, use a stack of heavy books under your phone.

Step 9 | Loosen the fingerprint sensor

  • Opening Pick: Slide the tip of a thin tool (opening pick) under the fingerprint sensor.
  • Pry gently to separate the fingerprint sensor from its adhesive, which holds it in place over the motherboard cover.

Step 10 | Unfasten the motherboard cover screws

Step 10 image

Remove the motherboard cover by using a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the eleven 3.9 mm screws.

Step 11 | Pry up the motherboard cover

  • Apply new adhesive during reassembly as needed.
  • Clean affected areas with isopropyl alcohol (at least 90% concentration) before applying adhesive.
