Xiaomi Mi 8 Fingerprint Sensor Replacement

This repair guide is for replacing a broken or faulty fingerprint sensor on the Xiaomi Mi 8.

  • You will need replacement adhesive to secure components during reassembly.

Step 1 | Rear Glass

Step 1 image

Apply iOpener to rear glass, heating it until it becomes flexible.

  • Secure iOpener in place for at least 2 minutes.

Secure a suction handle to the lower edge of the rear glass, as close to the edge as possible.

  • If the phone's rear glass is cracked, try lifting it with strong tape or superglueing the suction handle in place and allowing it to cure.
  • Lift the rear glass with the suction handle to create a gap between the glass and the frame.

If the glass won't budge, apply more heat as instructed with the iOpener to avoid overheating.

  • Insert an opening pick into the gap.
  • Slide the opening pick to the bottom right corner of the phone.

Insert a second opening pick into the lower left corner of the device.

  • Slide the new pick to the bottom left corner to break the adhesive seal.
  • Leave both opening picks in place to prevent re-adhesion.

Insert a third opening pick at the bottom left corner.

  • Slide the opening pick along the side of the Xiaomi Mi 8, starting from the bottom left corner, to cut the adhesive.
  • Be aware of the fingerprint flex cable and only insert the tip of the opening pick to avoid cutting it.

  • As the adhesive cools down, it will harden. If necessary, use your iOpener to reheat it.
  • Leave the opening pick in the top left corner to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Risk of damage if adhesive is not properly removed.

  • Disconnect the fingerprint flex cable using a spudger.
  • Remove the rear glass.

For reassembly, clean and prepare areas with existing adhesive by:

  • Removing remaining adhesive
  • Cleaning with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth

Allow several minutes for adhesive to bond after installing rear glass.

Apply pressure by placing heavy items, such as books, on top of the phone.

Step 9 | Fingerprint Sensor

Step 9 image

Place the iOpener on the rear glass and let it heat up for 2 minutes.
