Xiaomi Mi 8 AMOLED & Digitizer Replacement

Potential safety hazard: Reusing a deformed lithium-ion battery after forcefully removing it.

  • Discharge battery below 25% before disassembling phone to reduce risk of fire or explosion.
  • Remove the lithium-ion battery for access to display cables due to phone's design.
  • Verify you have correct replacement part, as some screens come pre-installed in a new frame (chassis), requiring different procedure.
  • Purchase replacement adhesive for reattaching components during reassembly.

This guide replaces the AMOLED Screen & Digitizer while leaving original frame and motherboard intact. Proceed with caution, as incorrect part or improper installation may result in device malfunction or damage.

Step 1 | Rear Glass

Step 1 image

Apply a iOpener to the rear glass, heating it until warm.

Wait for at least two minutes before proceeding.

Secure a suction handle to the lower edge of the rear glass, as close to the edge as possible.

  • If the rear glass is cracked, use strong tape or superglue to secure the suction handle in place, allowing it to cure.
  • Lift the rear glass with the suction handle to create a gap between the glass and the frame.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap.
  • If the glass doesn't budge, apply more heat using the iOpener instructions, taking care not to overheat.

  • Slide the opening pick to the bottom right corner of the phone.

Insert a third opening pick at the bottom left corner.

  • Slide the opening pick from the bottom left along the side of the device, cutting the adhesive.
  • Be careful not to cut the fingerprint flex cable; only insert the tip of the pick.

  • If the adhesive becomes too hard to cut, use your iOpener to reheat it.
  • Leave the pick in the top left corner to prevent re-adhesion.

Step 5

Peel the display flex cable away from the midframe using a pair of tweezers, as it's held by mild adhesive.

Step 21

Step 21 image

Apply a heated iOpener to the display for 2 minutes to loosen the adhesive.

The adhesive is strong, so you may need to reheat and reapply the iOpener multiple times to get it warm enough.

  • Reheat as needed until the adhesive is sufficiently loosened.

Apply a suction handle near the phone's bottom edge.

If the screen is cracked, use strong tape or superglue the suction handle in place and let it cure before proceeding.

  • Use the suction handle to lift the screen, then insert a small opening pick under the bottom edge.
  • Alternatively, try inserting a thin cutting tool (e.g., razor blade or playing card) if you cannot lift the screen.

Protect your eyes from loose glass shards.

Insert the opening pick near the bottom right corner and leave it there to prevent resealing of the adhesive.

Step 23

Step 23 image

Insert the second opening pick into the bottom left corner of the device.

Leave the pick in place to prevent resealing of the adhesive.

Step 24

Insert a third opening pick at the bottom left corner.

  • For the Xiaomi Mi 8, use only the tip (about 2 mm) of an opening pick to cut adhesive along long edges.
  • Avoid inserting too far to prevent display glass separation from the AMOLED screen.
  • Do not try to insert the pick deeper than necessary.

  • Slide the tip up to the top left corner and leave it in place to prevent resealing of adhesive.

Step 25

Slowly separate the screen from the frame.

  • Cut any remaining adhesive.
  • Maintain access to the flex cable and ensure it's no longer stuck to the frame, then thread it through its gap.

Do not proceed without safely routing the flex cable.

  • Remove the screen from the device.
  • Wipe down the midframe with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth to remove any remaining adhesive, taking care not to touch the cleaned areas until fully dry.
