Xiaomi Poco M3 Fingerprint Sensor Replacement

This repair guide is for replacing the fingerprint sensor in a Xiaomi Poco M3 device.

Step 1 | SIM Card tray removal

Risk of damaging internal components if the SIM card tray gasket is damaged or missing.

  • Insert a SIM card eject tool or a paperclip into the small hole near the top left corner of the Poco M3's SIM card tray.
  • Press firmly to eject the SIM card tray.
  • Remove the SIM card tray from the phone by pulling it out gently.
  • If a SIM card is present, it will fall out easily.

When reinserting the SIM card, ensure it's properly oriented inside the tray to prevent damage.

Step 2 | Insert a spudger

Do not insert the spudger in a flat angle, as this can damage the charging port.

  • Insert the spudger into the charging port at a steep angle.
  • Pry the back cover away from the bottom edge of the screen using the spudger to create a gap between the phone assembly and the back cover.

Step 3 | Insert an opening pick

Insert an opening pick into the gap between the phone assembly and the back cover.

  • Remove the spudger.

Step 4 | Release the plastic clips

Slide an opening pick to the bottom left corner and gently pry the clips.

  • Release the clips by sliding the pick downwards and outwards from that corner.
  • Continue the process around the bottom edge, working your way up the side.

Insert an opening pick into the left edge of the Poco M3 and slide it along the edge to release the plastic clips.

  • Slide the opening pick around the top left corner.
  • Continue sliding the opening pick along the top edge.
  • The plastic clips will release, allowing removal of the back cover.

Slide the opening pick around the top right corner to release the plastic clips.

  • Leave the opening pick inserted above the volume buttons.
  • Avoid using your opening pick near the physical buttons, as this can damage the flex cable connected to the motherboard.

Insert another opening pick into the gap at the bottom edge.

  • Slide the opening pick around the bottom right corner to release the plastic clips.
  • Continue along the right edge, stopping just below the fingerprint reader.

Remove the opening picks.

  • Flip the phone over and place it upside down.
  • Avoid pulling on the fingerprint flex cable, as tension can damage it.

  • Swing the back cover up from the right side, like opening a book.

Step 10 | Unfasten the screws

Remove the screws with a Phillips #00 screwdriver. There are ten screws in total, each requiring a length of 3.9 mm.

  • The screws can be found on the underside of the device.
  • Remove all ten screws to proceed with disassembly.

Step 11 | Pry up the motherboard cover

Insert an opening pick under the bottom right corner of the motherboard cover.

  • Slide the opening pick along the right edge to release the plastic clips.
  • At the top right, twist the opening pick counter-clockwise to lift the motherboard cover.

Step 12 | Remove the motherboard cover

Remove motherboard cover.

Step 13 | Disconnect the fingerprint sensor cable

Disconnect the fingerprint sensor cable using the flat end of a spudger at the bottom left corner of the motherboard.

Step 14 | Free the fingerprint sensor

Avoid scratching or damaging the fingerprint sensor ribbon cable and be careful not to pierce the fingerprint sensor rubber gasket.

  • Lift the fingerprint sensor rubber gasket off the top plastic pin using tweezers.

Step 15 | Remove the fingerprint sensor

Use tweezers to carefully lift the fingerprint sensor rubber gasket from its position over the bottom plastic pin.

  • Once lifted, set aside the fingerprint sensor rubber gasket.
  • Remove the fingerprint sensor by gently prying it away from its mount.
