Samsung Galaxy Phone Not Turning On

Step 1 | Debris in the Charge Port

Step 1 image

Be gentle when cleaning the charge port to avoid damaging sensitive pins and plastic.

  • Inspect the charge port using a flashlight for better visibility.
  • Check the cable's fit – it should sit flush with the phone's bottom. If loose, try cleaning first.
  • If debris is present, use a custom cotton swab or non-conductive probe to clear it (shave toothpick if needed).

Blowing compressed air can dislodge loosened bits, but be cautious not to damage the port.

Step 2 | Battery Malfunction

Step 2 image

Battery life is limited and batteries can fail unexpectedly.

  • Check the battery's health using the Samsung Members app.
  • Run a battery test under the support tab in the app.

Inspect for signs of battery swelling:

  • Enclosure separation
  • Localized screen discoloration
  • Housing bowing or deformation

Recently repaired the device? Ensure the battery is properly connected.

  • Disconnect and reconnect the battery to resolve unexpected charging issues.

If diagnostic tests fail or visual signs of failure are present, replace the battery.

Step 3 | Faulty Charge Port

Damage to the USB port can cause incorrectly routed electrical signals or trigger overcurrent protection.

  • Inspect the port thoroughly with a flashlight for better visibility.
  • Check for bent pins or corrosion on the interior of the port.

If you find damage, replace the charging port daughterboard to avoid incompatibility issues with your exact model's networking components.

  • Be sure to get a daughterboard compatible with your device's model.
  • Gently check for wiggle with tweezers if the tongue in the middle of the USB-C port (or micro-USB on older devices) seems loose.

If your charger or USB port is unusually hot, or connected chargers shut off, it could indicate a shorted pin to ground.

Step 4 | Power Button Stuck or Damaged

Step 4 image

Do not attempt to power on the phone while charging.

  • Check the power button's movement: is it depressing, clicking when pressed?
  • If not clicking, inspect for damage or deformation; a dent can cause sticking.
  • Clean debris from around the buttons with a toothpick and cotton swab and isopropyl alcohol.
  • For persistent issues: internal cleaning or inspection may be necessary.
  • If stuck, inspect for physical debris lodged in the housing; replace button or cable if damaged.

Step 5 | Other Component Malfunction

Power-on issues may also stem from non-charging component failures.

  • Disconnect all components aside from the screen, battery, and power button from the board.

Verify if the device turns on with just these connected.

  • If it powers on, reconnect components one by one to isolate which component is faulty.
  • Be cautious when attaching daughterboards and other parts that may be at fault themselves.

Use process of elimination to identify the problematic part before replacement.

Step 6 | Damaged Motherboard

Step 6 image

Liquid damage can cause irreparable harm; check for signs of burn, crack, liquid residue, corrosion, or bend on the board.

  • Inspect the motherboard for visible damage before proceeding.
  • If signs of liquid damage are found, consult the iPhone Liquid Damage Guide for assistance.

In cases of severe damage, replacing the motherboard is often the most practical solution.

  • However, repair of affected circuitry may be possible with specialized tools and microsoldering expertise.
  • Contact an independent repair shop for professional assistance if you are unsure about repair procedures.

If recently repaired your phone, inspect the USB board cable connector for damage; it requires extra care due to its size (up to 78 pins) and delicate reconnection process.
