Nexus S Speaker Replacement

Replacing the speaker in your Nexus S is made easier with this guide.

Step 1 | Rear Panel

Insert a plastic opening tool near the rear-facing camera, between the rear panel and the inner rear frame.

  • Pry up the rear case using the plastic opening tool around the perimeter of the device.

Remove the rear panel from the Nexus S.

Step 3 | Battery

Use the edge of a plastic opening tool to lift the battery from the end closest to the headphone jack.

  • Remove the battery from the device.

Step 4 | SIM Card

Slide the SIM card down from its slot using your thumb.

  • Continue to move it until the SIM card is completely removed.

Step 5 | Rear Inner Frame

Remove the six Phillips screws holding the rear inner frame to the inner case.

  • Insert the flat edge of a plastic opening tool between the rear inner frame and the top left corner.
  • Pry upwards on the tool to release the top right clip.

  • Position the plastic opening tool to the right of the power button.
  • Slide the plastic opening tool downwards along the perimeter to release the clips on the right side.

Release the bottom clips near the phone's bottom.

Step 9

Insert the plastic opening tool into position, then carefully pry it to release the final clip holding the rear inner frame to the inner assembly.

Step 10

Remove the rear inner frame of the Nexus S by lifting it out.

Step 11 | SIM Card Board

Remove the SIM Board connector from the motherboard using the flat edge of a plastic opening tool.

  • Insert a plastic opening tool between the SIM Card board and motherboard.
  • Pry up the clips near the right bottom edge of the SIM Card board.
  • Continue prying around the entire perimeter until all clips are disengaged.

  • Remove the SIM Card board by lifting it from its connectors.

Step 14 | Motherboard

Remove the headphone jack cable from its socket.

  • Disconnect the digitizer cable connector.
  • Unplug the camera/SIM board connector.

Prying the socket can cause severe damage.

  • Insert the flat edge of a plastic opening tool under the headphone jack connector, prying upwards.
  • Avoid prying on the socket itself and focus on the connector.
  • Repeat this procedure for the digitizer and rear camera/SIM board connectors.

Step 16

Remove the three Phillips screws holding the motherboard in place.

Insert a plastic opening tool into the lower right corner of the motherboard and gently pry it loose.

  • Lift the motherboard straight up to remove it from its recess.

Step 18 | Speaker

Caution: The earpiece and speaker are connected by a flexible cable.

  • Leave the speaker in place.
