Nexus S Rear Camera Replacement

This repair guide helps to replace the rear-facing camera.

Step 1 | Rear Panel

Insert a plastic opening tool into the gap between the rear panel and inner rear frame near the rear-facing camera.

  • Pry up the rear case around the perimeter of the Nexus S using your plastic opening tool.

Remove the rear panel from the Nexus S.

Step 3 | Battery

Use the edge of a plastic opening tool to gently lift the battery from its retaining clip at the end nearest the headphone jack.

  • Continue lifting until the battery is completely removed from the device.

Step 4 | SIM Card

  • Slide the SIM card down using your thumb, starting at the SIM card slot.
  • Remove the SIM card once it is free.

Step 5 | Rear Inner Frame

Remove the Six Phillips screws holding the rear inner frame to the inner case.

Insert plastic opening tool between rear inner frame and top left corner.

  • Pry tool upwards to release top right corner from inner assembly clips.

Insert the plastic opening tool to the right of the power button.

  • Slide the tool downwards along the perimeter of the device to release the clips on the right side.

Release the bottom clips near the device's base.

Step 9

Insert the plastic opening tool into position and gently pry it inwards.

Make sure not to apply too much pressure, which can damage the components.

Step 10

Remove the rear inner frame of the Nexus S by lifting it out.

Step 11 | SIM Card Board

Pry the SIM Board connector off its socket on the motherboard using the flat edge of a plastic opening tool.

Insert the plastic opening tool between the SIM Card board and the motherboard.

  • Pry up the clips near the right bottom edge of the SIM Card board.
  • Continue prying along the entire bottom perimeter until all clips are released.

Remove the SIM Card board from the Nexus S by lifting it out.

Step 14 | Motherboard

Insert the flat edge of a plastic opening tool under the headphone jack connector, then pry it upward.

Step 15

Follow the same steps used in the previous connection disconnection.

Step 16

Use a plastic opening tool to carefully pry the speaker connector, highlighted in red, away from its socket on the motherboard.

  • Remove the three Phillips screws securing the motherboard to the inner assembly.

Step 17

Locate and carefully lift out the motherboard, taking care to avoid damaging connected cables.

Step 18 | Rear Camera

Flip up the rear facing camera ZIF connector using the edge of a plastic opening tool.

Step 19

Use a pair of tweezers to carefully lift and remove the rear camera from the motherboard.
