Nexus S Motherboard Replacement

This repair guide covers replacing the entire motherboard, which includes both the rear camera and speaker components.

Step 1 | Rear Panel

Insert plastic opening tool between rear panel and inner rear frame near rear-facing camera.

  • Pry up rear case along perimeter using plastic opening tool.

Remove the rear panel from the Nexus S.

Step 3 | Battery

Use the plastic opening tool to lift the battery from the end nearest the headphone jack.

  • Position the tool at the edge of the battery and gently pry it free.
  • Once loose, carefully remove the battery from the Nexus S.

Step 4 | SIM Card

  • Slide the SIM card down from the SIM card slot using your thumb.
  • Once exposed, remove the SIM card.

Step 5 | Rear Inner Frame

Remove the Six Phillips screws holding the rear inner frame to the inner case.

Locate the Nexus S's top left corner, where the rear inner frame meets the device.

  • Insert the flat edge of a plastic opening tool into this gap.
  • Pry the tool upwards to release the top right corner from its clips on the inner assembly.

Locate the area adjacent to the power button.

  • Insert a plastic opening tool into this region.
  • Slide the tool downwards along the device's edge, releasing clips on the right side.

Release the bottom clips near the device's base.

  • Identify the clips' locations.
  • Push the clips towards you to disengage them.

Step 9

Insert the plastic opening tool and pry it to release the final clip.

  • The clip secures the rear inner frame to the inner assembly.

Step 10

Remove the rear inner frame by lifting it out.

Step 11 | Motherboard

Disconnect the headphone jack cable from its socket on the motherboard.

  • Remove the digitizer cable connector.
  • Disconnect the camera/SIM board connector.

Prying the socket can cause severe damage.

  • Insert a plastic opening tool under the headphone jack connector, prying upwards on the connector itself.
  • Repeat for the digitizer and rear camera/SIM board connectors.

Step 13

Remove the three Phillips screws holding the motherboard in place.

Wedge a plastic opening tool near the bottom right corner of the motherboard and pry upwards.

  • The motherboard should dislodge from its recess.
  • Lift and remove the motherboard completely.
