Samsung Galaxy S9 Display Replacement

Do not attempt to follow this guide without a replacement display specifically designed for your Samsung Galaxy S9 model and compatible with its original frame.

  • Discharge the battery below 25% before disassembling. The battery can catch fire and/or explode if accidentally punctured, although this is rare when fully discharged.
  • Remove the rear glass cover, but note that opening your phone will damage its waterproof seals. If you do not replace these seals, your phone will lose its water protection functionality.
  • Use replacement adhesive to reattach the back cover to the phone; if not provided with your new display, secure it with a strong double-sided tape like Tesa 61395.

The display's removal process often damages the screen. Proceed only if you're replacing the display and intend to discard it afterwards.

Step 1 | Rear Glass Removal

Step 1 image

Switch off your phone before starting.

  • Apply a heated iOpener to a long edge of the phone for at least two minutes to loosen rear glass adhesive.
  • You may need to reheat and reapply several times during removal.
  • Follow iOpener instructions to avoid overheating.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 has very strong adhesive. Be careful not to overheat the phone, as this can damage the AMOLED display or internal battery.

Alternative heat sources include a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate.

Step 2

Step 2 image

Locate the thick and thin areas of adhesive on the back cover as shown in the image.

  • Slice through the adhesive in these areas using a suitable tool (e.g. spudger or craft knife).

Avoid cutting in this area to protect the fingerprint sensor flex cable.

If rear glass is cracked, suction cup may not stick.

  • Apply strong tape or superglue to suction cup for better grip.

Lift back cover's bottom edge with suction cup, creating a small gap between the cover and frame.

This may require significant force; apply more heat if necessary.

  • Insert opening pick in created gap and slide to bottom right corner.
  • Insert second opening pick at bottom left corner.
  • Insert third opening pick to prevent adhesive resealing.

Step 4

Step 4 image

  • Insert only the tip of the opening pick at the bottom left corner.
  • Slide it along the side to the top, keeping it away from other components.
  • Leave the pick around the top corner; this will prevent adhesive resealing.

Step 5

Apply heat as needed while sliding an opening pick from the bottom right along the side to the top.

  • Slide the opening pick around the corner and cut the remaining adhesive at the top of the phone.
  • Do not open the phone completely yet, as the fragile fingerprint sensor cable still connects it to the motherboard.

The back cover is under tension; if the adhesive isn't softened enough, it may break during removal.

Step 6

Use a spudger to carefully lift the rear glass, starting from the area around the volume button.

  • Pry up the fingerprint sensor flex cable using the edge of the spudger.
  • Disconnect the prised-up cable.

Step 7

Step 7 image

Replace rear glass with caution — careful handling required.

  • Remove the rear glass.
  • Follow reassembly instructions to install new adhesive and rear glass.
  • If replacing, transfer the rear camera bezel along with the fingerprint sensor. Refer to separate guide for detailed procedure.

Locate the NFC antenna and charging coil on the right side of the plastic cover.

  • Insert an opening pick under the right side of the plastic cover.
  • Pry or twist gently to release the plastic clips securing the cover in place.

Remove the plastic cover to access the NFC antenna and charging coil.

Step 12 | Battery Disconnection

Step 12 image

Disengage the battery flex cable by gently prying it loose with the flat end of a spudger.

Step 13 | Unfasten Motherboard Cover

Step 13 image

Remove the two Phillips #00 screws with a size of 4mm from the plastic cover.

Step 14 | Remove Motherboard Cover

Disconnect the display flex cable using the flat end of a spudger.

Step 16

Step 16 image

Apply iOpener to the display for at least 2 minutes, reheating and reapplying as needed to loosen adhesive.

Overheating can damage components, so follow iOpener instructions carefully.

  • If your display is cracked, apply clear tape over the glass to prevent further breakage and bodily harm.
  • Lay overlapping strips of clear packing tape across the display to contain glass shards and provide structural integrity.

Wear safety glasses to protect eyes from flying glass particles during repair.

Step 17

Step 17 image

Apply a suction cup to the upper edge of the phone when the screen is warm.

  • If the suction cup doesn't stick, try using strong tape or supergluing it in place and allowing it to cure before proceeding.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap and slide it towards the top left corner to start cutting the adhesive.

Step 18

Insert another opening pick and guide it to the top right corner.

  • For added protection, insert a third opening pick.

Step 19

  • Slide a right opening pick halfway down the side of the frame to cut adhesive.
  • If cutting is challenging, reheat and reapply the iOpener.
  • Place a left opening pick halfway down the frame and secure it in place.

Insert a pick on the left side, sliding down to the bottom left corner.

Be cautious of the flex cable near the power button when cutting the adhesive.

  • Insert another pick at the right side to cut the remaining adhesive.
  • Proceed carefully to avoid damaging nearby components.

Remove the old display by cutting adhesive on all sides.

  • Lift the display upwards slowly to remove it.
  • Thread the display cable through a hole in the midframe carefully.

Bent frames or leftover glue can damage the new display; inspect and replace if necessary.

  • Before installing, clean glued areas with isopropyl alcohol (>90%) and a lint-free cloth.
