Samsung Galaxy S8 Volume Buttons Cable Replacement

  • Disassembly Preparation: Remove multiple screws to access the interior of your Samsung Galaxy S8.
  • Disconnect cables to expose the volume button cable.
  • Move parts out of the way for clear access.

Step 1 | Back Glass Assembly

Step 1 image

Opening your phone will compromise its waterproof seals.

  • Prepare replacement adhesive or take precautions against liquid exposure.

Use caution when heating the OLED display and internal battery.

  1. Apply heat to a long edge of the S8 using an iOpener for about 2 minutes, reapplying as needed.
  2. iOpener instructions must be followed to avoid overheating.
  3. Alternative heat sources (hair dryer, heat gun, hot plate) may be used, but exercise care against overheat damage.

Meanwhile, read the next step for guidance on where to pry.

Careful: prying into thin adhesive areas may damage the screen.

  • Identify the thick and thin sections of adhesive around the rear glass panel.
  • Pry along the edges, avoiding the thin areas to prevent damage to the screen.
  • Avoid prying near the fingerprint sensor to prevent accidental damage.

Step 3

Avoid applying suction cup near the curved edge for a secure seal.

  • Apply the suction cup as close as possible to the heated edge, avoiding the curve.
  • If the back cover is cracked, use strong tape or superglue the suction cup in place and let it cure.

Due to curved glass, apply upward pressure while inserting the opening pick.

Step 4

Step 4 image

Reheat and reapply iOpener to soften adhesive.

Make sure tool is still inserted firmly into the glass before proceeding.

Step 5

Slide the opening pick down the side of the phone, carefully prying the adhesive apart.

Be cautious to maintain control over the tool to avoid losing it in the seam.

If separation becomes challenging, reheat and reapply the iOpener.

Step 6

Continue heating and cutting the adhesive along the remaining three sides of the phone.

  • Leave a pre-existing opening pick in place as you move to each new side, preventing the adhesive from re-sealing.
  • Repeat this process for each side until all four sides are cut and separated.

Step 7

Locate and disconnect the fingerprint sensor cable, which is short and will come loose as the rear glass is removed.

  • As you lift the rear glass, ensure the orange cable with a blue connector has disconnected by peeking inside.
  • Use opening picks to slice through remaining adhesive, but do not open the phone further if the fingerprint sensor cable is snagged or taut. Instead:
    • Disconnect the connector with a spudger point before proceeding, as it may be caught on internal components.

During reassembly, align the back cover and gently snap the fingerprint sensor cable into place by pressing straight down on its socket using the flat end of your spudger.

When reattaching the rear glass, be sure it is fully seated to avoid damaging the phone's internal components.

Step 8

Step 8 image

Remove any remaining adhesive from the phone's chassis using tweezers.

  • Clean the adhesion areas with high concentration isopropyl alcohol (at least 90%) and a lint-free cloth.
  • Peel off the adhesive backing from the new rear glass.

Carefully align one edge of the glass against the phone chassis before pressing it firmly into place.

  • Follow this guide to reinstall the old back cover or install a back cover without pre-installed adhesive.

Ensure your phone is working properly after repair by testing it before installing new adhesive and resealing the phone.

  • If desired, you can reinstall the back cover without replacing the adhesive. Remove any large chunks of adhesive that may prevent proper seating.
  • Apply heat to the back cover and apply pressure to secure it in place.

Note: The back cover will not be waterproof after this repair, but the glue should hold securely enough.

  • If you need to transfer the camera bezel, follow our camera bezel replacement guide.
