Samsung Galaxy S8 NFC Antenna and Charging Coil Assembly Replacement

Discharging the battery below 25% is crucial to prevent explosion or fire in case it's punctured.

  • Prepare replacement adhesive for reattaching the rear glass cover.
  • Completely discharge the battery before proceeding with disassembly.

Step 1 | iOpener Heating

Step 1 image

Do not proceed with damaged or dirty microwave to avoid potential overheating.

  • Clean the microwave bottom before using the iOpener.
  • Place the iOpener in the center of the microwave.
  • Ensure free spinning for carousel microwaves to avoid overheating or damage.

Step 2

Step 2 image

Never touch a swollen iOpener — risk of explosion.

  • Heat the iOpener in the microwave for 30 seconds, adjusting time based on wattage.
  • The iOpener is ready when barely too hot to touch.

Do not overheat the iOpener — risk of bursting. Maximum temperature: 100°C (212°F).

  • Throughout the repair, reheat in 30-second increments as it cools.
  • A properly heated iOpener stays warm for up to 10 minutes.

Continue using a very hot iOpener while waiting for it to cool down further before reheating.

Step 3

Step 3 image

Handling the iOpener can cause burns — use caution.

  • Remove the iOpener from the microwave using a flat end to avoid the hot center.
  • Hold the iOpener by one of the two flat ends to prevent burns.
  • If necessary, use an oven mitt for added protection when handling the iOpener.

Step 4 | Alternate iOpener heating method

Step 4 image

The iOpener will be very hot after heating; hold it only by the end tabs.

  • Fill a pot with enough boiling water to fully submerge an iOpener.
  • Heat, then turn off the heat once the water reaches a boil.
  • Submerge the iOpener in the hot water for 2-3 minutes.
  • Use tongs to carefully remove the heated iOpener from the pot.
  • Dry the iOpener thoroughly with a towel before use.

If reheating is necessary, repeat this process for an additional 2-3 minutes.

Step 5 | Back Glass Assembly

Step 5 image

Opening your phone will compromise its waterproof seals.

  • Have replacement adhesive ready before proceeding, or take care to avoid liquid exposure during reassembly.
  • Heat an iOpener and apply it to a long edge of the S8 for about 2 minutes.
  • You may need to reheat and reapply the iOpener multiple times to achieve adequate warmth.

When using alternative heat sources (hair dryer, heat gun, hot plate), be cautious not to overheat the phone.

The OLED display and internal battery are susceptible to heat damage.

  • Use this time to review the next step for guidance on where to pry.

Step 6

Protect the fingerprint sensor by avoiding its area.

  • Locate thick and thin areas of adhesive around rear glass panel edge.
  • Cut through adhesive at these points using a prying pattern as seen from outside phone.

Step 7

The suction cup may not stick if the back cover is cracked.

  • Apply a suction cup near the heated edge, avoiding the curved portion of the glass.
  • If it won't stick, try using strong tape or superglue to secure the suction cup.

Lift the phone with the suction cup and insert an opening pick under the rear glass.

When dealing with curved glass, you'll need to push up rather than inserting parallel to the phone's surface.

Step 8

Step 8 image

Reheat the iOpener and reapply it to the stuck area.

  • The heat will help loosen the adhesive.

Step 9

Step 9 image

Apply gentle pressure to slide the opening pick along the side of the device, prying apart the adhesive.

  • Work slowly to maintain control over the tool and prevent it from slipping out of position.
  • If separation becomes challenging, reheat the iOpener and reapply as needed.

Step 10

Repeat the heating and cutting process for the remaining three sides.

  • Apply an opening pick to each side before moving to the next one.
  • This will prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Step 11

Step 11 image

Disconnect the fingerprint sensor cable as you remove the rear glass.

  • Look for the orange cable with a blue connector near the main camera and ensure it's disconnected.
  • Use opening picks to carefully slice through remaining adhesive and open the phone slightly.
  • If the fingerprint sensor cable seems snagged, disconnect the connector with a spudger before proceeding.
  • During reassembly, align the back cover so the cable connector lines up perfectly over its socket.

Gently snap the connector into place by pressing it straight down with the flat end of your spudger.

Remove the rear glass from the phone carefully to avoid damaging the fingerprint sensor cable or surrounding components.

Step 12

Step 12 image

Remove old adhesive with tweezers and clean with 90%+ isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth.

  • Peel off backing from new rear glass.
  • Lining up one edge, press firmly onto phone chassis.

Phone must be turned on and tested before installing new adhesive.

If desired, remove large chunks of old adhesive and secure back cover with heat and pressure.

Note: This will not provide waterproof protection.

Step 13 | NFC Antenna and Charging Coil Assembly
