Samsung Galaxy S8 Motherboard Replacement

Discharge the battery to at least 25% before proceeding, as a dead short can cause a battery explosion.

  • Remove the rear glass cover using a suitable tool for the removal of adhesive.
  • The motherboard and daughterboard differ between North American Snapdragon (G950U) and international Exynos (G950F) versions; this guide is written for G950U.
  • Keep replacement adhesive on hand to reattach the rear glass cover.

Step 1 | iOpener Heating

Step 1 image

Thumbnail 2

Clean the microwave first to avoid gunk sticking to the iOpener.

  • Place the iOpener in the center of the microwave.
  • In carousel microwaves, ensure the plate spins freely:
    • Failure to do so may cause the iOpener to overheat and burn.

Step 2

Step 2 image

Never attempt to heat above 100°C (212°F) — risk of overheating.

  • Heat the iOpener in the microwave for thirty seconds.
  • Reheat as needed, but be cautious not to overheat and cause damage.
  • A heated iOpener should stay warm for up to ten minutes.
  • Do not touch a swollen or excessively hot iOpener

Step 3

Step 3 image

Handle the iOpener with care as it may be extremely hot.

  • Remove the iOpener from the microwave, holding by one of the flat ends to avoid direct contact with the center.
  • If needed, use an oven mitt for protection when handling the iOpener.

Step 4 | Alternate iOpener heating method

Step 4 image

Thumbnail 2

Fill a pot or pan with enough boiling water to fully submerge an iOpener.

Be careful when handling the hot iOpener after heating.

  • Heat the water to a boil, then turn off the heat.
  • Submerge an iOpener in the hot water for 2-3 minutes.
  • Use tongs to extract the heated iOpener.
  • Dry the iOpener thoroughly with a towel.

Reheat as needed by submerging the iOpener in boiling water for 2-3 minutes.

Step 5 | Back Glass Assembly

Step 5 image

Opening your phone will compromise its waterproof seals.

  • Have replacement adhesive ready before proceeding, or take care to avoid liquid exposure during reassembly.
  • iOpener: Heat and apply it to a long edge of the S8 for about 2 minutes.
  • Reheat as needed; follow instructions to avoid overheating.
  • Alternative heat sources: hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate (be careful not to overheat).

The OLED display and internal battery are susceptible to heat damage.

While waiting for the adhesive to soften, proceed to the next step for prying location guidance.

Step 6

Protect the fingerprint sensor by avoiding the thin area on the prying pattern.

  • Locate and identify thick and thin areas of adhesive around the rear glass panel edge.
  • Cut through the adhesive, following the prying pattern.

Step 7

Apply a suction cup near the heated edge, avoiding the curved portion.

The suction cup may not seal on the curved edge or if the back cover is cracked.

  • Try using strong tape or superglue to secure it in place.

Lift the suction cup and insert an opening pick under the rear glass, pushing up due to the curved shape.

Step 8

Step 8 image

Reheat and reapply the iOpener to the device for 30 seconds.

Be careful not to overheat the device or burn yourself.

Step 9

Step 9 image

Slide the opening pick down the side of the phone, gently prying apart the adhesive.

  • Be cautious to keep the tool within the seam to avoid damage.
  • If separation becomes difficult, reheat and reapply the iOpener.

Step 10

Apply the same heating and cutting process to the other three sides of the phone.

  • Use an opening pick on each side, leaving it in place before moving to the next side.

Step 11

Step 11 image

If the fingerprint sensor cable seems snagged or stays taut, do not open the phone further.

  • Lift the rear glass near the main camera and verify that the orange cable with a blue connector has disconnected.
  • Use opening picks to slice through remaining adhesive and slightly open the phone.

Disconnect the connector using a spudger before proceeding, if necessary.

Risk of damage: do not force the fingerprint sensor cable into its socket.

  • During reassembly, angle the back cover and align the cable connector over its socket.
  • Gently snap the connector into place by pressing straight down with a flat spudger.

Remove the glass from the phone.

Step 12

Step 12 image

Use tweezers to remove remaining adhesive from the phone chassis.

  • Clean adhesion areas with high concentration isopropyl alcohol (at least 90%) and a lint-free cloth.
  • Peel off the new rear glass's adhesive backing and align one edge against the phone chassis.
  • Firmly press the glass onto the phone, following the guide for reinstalling the old back cover if necessary.

Do not install a new back cover without testing your repair first, or applying adhesive and resealing the phone.

  • Optionally remove large chunks of old adhesive to ensure proper seating.
  • Apply pressure to secure the back cover after heating it.

This will not provide waterproof protection, but standard adhesive should be sufficient for hold.

  • Transfer camera bezel as needed (follow our replacement guide if necessary).

  • Remove eleven 3.7mm screws with a Phillips #000 screwdriver.

Insert a SIM card opening tool into the small hole on the left side of the top edge.

Press firmly to eject the tray to avoid damaging the phone.

  • Remove the SIM card tray from the phone.
  • When reinserting, ensure the SIM card is in the correct orientation relative to the tray.
