Samsung Galaxy S8 I/O Daughterboard Replacement

Discharging the battery below 25% is crucial to prevent a potential explosion or fire in case it's damaged during disassembly.

  • Check for damage to the USB-C connector or microphone, which may require I/O daughterboard replacement.
  • I/O Daughterboard Replacement involves removing the rear glass cover and requires replacement adhesive.
  • Ensure you have the correct motherboard and daughterboard for your device: North American Snapdragon (G950U) or international Exynos (G950F).
  • The North American version is used in this guide; however, the motherboard and daughterboard are not interchangeable between versions.

Step 1 | iOpener Heating

Step 1 image

Thumbnail 2

Clean your microwave thoroughly before proceeding to prevent residue from sticking to the iOpener.

  • Place the iOpener in the center of the microwave.
  • (Carousel microwaves only): Ensure the plate spins freely to prevent overheating or damage to the iOpener.

Step 2

Step 2 image

Do not attempt to heat over 100°C (212°F).

  • Heat the iOpener in the microwave for thirty seconds.
  • Reheat as needed, keeping it warm for up to ten minutes. For each reheating, use an additional thirty seconds in the microwave.
  • The iOpener is ready when it's just too hot to touch lightly with your skin.

Overheating may cause the iOpener to burst.

  • Do not touch the iOpener if it appears swollen.
  • If still too hot, continue using while waiting for it to cool down before reheating again.

Step 3

Step 3 image

Handle the iOpener with care as it will be extremely hot.

  • Remove the iOpener from the microwave using a flat end.
  • Use an oven mitt if necessary to protect your hands from heat.

Step 4 | Alternate iOpener heating method

Step 4 image

Thumbnail 2

Fill a pot with enough boiling water to submerge an iOpener.

  • Heat the water to a boil, then turn off the heat.
  • Submerge an iOpener in the hot water for 2-3 minutes.

The iOpener will be very hot — use tongs to handle it and hold only by the end tabs.

  • Extract the heated iOpener with tongs.
  • Dry the iOpener thoroughly with a towel.

Reheat as needed: boil water, turn off heat, and submerge for 2-3 minutes.

Step 5 | Back Glass Assembly

Step 5 image

Opening your phone will compromise its waterproof seals; have replacement adhesive ready or take care to avoid liquid exposure if reassembling without it.

  • Heat an iOpener and apply it to a long edge of the S8 for about 2 minutes, potentially reheating and reapplying multiple times.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but be cautious not to overheat the phone – especially the OLED display and internal battery.

Step 6

Step 6 image

Protect the fingerprint sensor by avoiding thin areas of adhesive.

  • Cut through thick portions of adhesive around the rear glass panel edge.
  • Follow the prying pattern as indicated in the first image for the rear case adhesive layout.

Step 7

Step 7 image

Thumbnail 3

Ensure the back panel is warm before proceeding.

  • Apply a suction cup near the heated edge, avoiding the curved portion.
  • If the back cover is cracked or the suction cup won't stick, use strong tape or superglue to secure it in place.

With the suction cup in position, carefully lift and insert an opening pick under the rear glass.

Due to the curved design, be prepared to push up rather than inserting parallel to the phone's surface.

Step 8

Step 8 image

Reheat the iOpener and reapply it to the glass.

  • The heat will help loosen any remaining adhesive.

Step 9

Step 9 image

Thumbnail 2

Slide a precision opening pick down the side of the phone to separate the adhesive.

  • Work slowly to maintain control over the tool.
  • If cutting becomes difficult, reheat and reapply the iOpener.

Step 10

Step 10 image

Thumbnail 3

Continue heating and cutting around the remaining three sides of the phone.

  • Place a new opening pick on each side, leaving it in place while moving to the next side.
  • Repeat this process until all four sides are separated from the frame.

Step 11

Step 11 image

Risk of damage: Do not open the phone further if the fingerprint sensor cable stays taut.

  • Disconnect the orange cable with a blue connector as the rear glass is removed, ensuring it separates cleanly due to its short length.
  • Lift the glass and inspect that the cable has disconnected.

Risk of damage: Do not force the fingerprint sensor cable if it appears snagged or taut.

  • Use a spudger to gently disconnect the cable connector if necessary.

Important for reassembly:

Align the back cover with the phone, angling it until the fingerprint sensor cable connector lines up perfectly over its socket.

  • Use a spudger to snap the connector into place by pressing straight down on the flat end.

Remove the glass from the phone.

Step 12

Step 12 image

Remove remaining adhesive from phone chassis with tweezers.

  • Clean adhesion areas with isopropyl alcohol (at least 90%) and a lint-free cloth.
  • Peel off backing of new rear glass, align one edge against the phone chassis, and press firmly onto the phone.

Turn on your phone and test repair before applying new adhesive and resealing.

  • If reinstalling old back cover, follow this guide or install without pre-installed adhesive.
  • Remove large chunks of adhesive to ensure flush fit. Secure with heat and pressure.

Note: Reinstalling without replacing adhesive may compromise waterproof integrity.

  • If transferring camera bezel, follow our camera bezel replacement guide.
