Samsung Galaxy S8 Battery Replacement

A charged lithium-ion battery can catch fire and/or explode if accidentally punctured.

  • Discharge the battery below 25% before disassembling your phone.
  • If your battery is swollen, exercise caution:
    • Do not heat your phone or use flames near it.
    • Wear eye protection and consider using a dropper or syringe with isopropyl alcohol (90+%) to weaken the adhesive on the back cover, if needed.

Step 1 | iOpener Heating

Step 1 image

Clean the microwave thoroughly before proceeding to avoid gunk adhering to the iOpener.

  • Place the iOpener in the center of the microwave.
  • For carousel microwaves: Ensure the plate spins freely to prevent overheating and damage to the iOpener.

Step 2

Step 2 image

Never attempt to heat above 100°C (212°F).

  • barely too hot to touch, indicating sufficient heating time.
  • Reheat in the microwave for an additional 30 seconds as needed throughout the repair.
  • Do not overheat, which may cause the iOpener to burst.

Never touch a swollen iOpener.

Continue using an excessively hot iOpener while it cools down, but avoid prolonged exposure above 100°C (212°F).

A properly heated iOpener will stay warm for up to 10 minutes.

Step 3

Step 3 image

The iOpener will be extremely hot after microwaving, handle with care.

  • Remove the iOpener from the microwave.
  • Use one of the flat ends to avoid touching the hot center.
  • Wear an oven mitt if extra protection is needed.

Step 4 | Alternate iOpener heating method

Step 4 image

Caution: The iOpener will be extremely hot after heating.

  • Fill a pot or pan with enough boiling water to fully submerge an iOpener.
  • Turn off the heat and place an iOpener into the water for 2-3 minutes, ensuring it's fully submerged.
  • Use tongs to carefully remove the heated iOpener from the hot water.
  • Dry the iOpener thoroughly with a towel before handling.

When reheating, repeat these steps: heat boiling water, turn off heat, and submerge the iOpener for 2-3 minutes.

Step 5 | Back Glass Assembly

Step 5 image

Opening your phone will compromise its waterproof seals; have replacement adhesive ready or take precautions against liquid exposure.

  • Heat an iOpener for 2 minutes on a long edge of the S8, reheating and reapplying as necessary to achieve a softening effect.
  • Avoid overheating by following the iOpener instructions; alternative heat sources like a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate may be used with caution.

While waiting for the adhesive to soften, proceed to the next step to plan your prying approach.

Step 6

Step 6 image

Prying into thin adhesive areas can cause damage to the device.

  • Identify thick and thin adhesive areas around the rear glass panel.
  • Avoid prying near the fingerprint sensor.
  • Apply the prying pattern as seen from the outside of the phone:
    • Pry on thick adhesive portions first.
    • Separate adhesive areas carefully, working around the edge.

Step 7

Apply a suction cup near the heated edge, avoiding the curved edge.

  • Wait until the back panel is warm to the touch before proceeding.
  • If the back cover is cracked, use strong tape or superglue to secure the suction cup.

The suction cup may not seal on curved glass.

  • Place an opening pick under the rear glass as you lift the phone.
  • Due to curved glass, push up instead of inserting parallel to the phone's surface.

Step 8

Step 8 image

Reheat and reapply the iOpener to soften the adhesive.

  • Ensure the tool is still firmly inserted into the glass.

Step 9

Step 9 image

Slide a precision plastic spudger along the phone's edge, carefully prying up the adhesive.

  • Move the tool slowly to maintain control.
  • If cutting becomes difficult, reheat and reapply the iOpener.

Step 10

Continue heating and cutting process for remaining three sides.

  • Leave an opening pick on each side before moving to the next.

Do not open further if the fingerprint sensor cable stays taut.

  • As you lift the rear glass, verify that the orange cable with a blue connector has disconnected.
  • Use opening picks to carefully slice through remaining adhesive and open the phone slightly.

Do not proceed if the fingerprint sensor cable seems snagged; instead, use a spudger to gently disconnect the connector.

  • During reassembly, angle the back cover into position until the cable connector lines up with its socket.
  • Use the flat end of a spudger to snap the connector into place by pressing straight down.

Remove the rear glass from the phone.

Step 12

Step 12 image

Use tweezers to remove remaining adhesive from phone chassis.

  • Clean adhesion areas with high concentration isopropyl alcohol (at least 90%) and lint-free cloth.
  • Peel backing off new rear glass, align one edge with phone chassis, and press firmly into place.

Turn on phone and test repair before applying new adhesive.

  • To install without adhesive, remove large chunks of existing adhesive and secure back cover with heat and pressure.
  • Transfer camera bezel if necessary; follow camera bezel replacement guide for details.

Step 13 | NFC Antenna and Charging Coil Assembly

Step 13 image

Remove the eleven 3.7 mm screws with a Phillips #000 screwdriver.

Step 14

Step 14 image

Disconnect the NFC antenna and charging coil assembly from the motherboard.

  • Use a plastic spudger to carefully pry it loose.
  • Set it aside, taking care not to damage any surrounding components.

Step 15 | Loudspeaker Assembly

Step 15 image
  • Remove three Phillips #000 screws, each with a diameter of 3.7 mm.

Step 16

Remove the loudspeaker assembly.

Step 17 | Battery

Step 17 image

Disconnect the battery connector with the flat end of a spudger.

Step 18

Step 18 image

Apply 1-2 drops of high-concentration isopropyl alcohol under each corner of the battery, allowing it to penetrate for several minutes.

  • This will help loosen the adhesive designed for use with isopropyl alcohol.
  • Be careful not to use too much, as this can damage the display.

Step 19

Step 19 image

Do not use excessive force or metal tools — risk of damaging the daughterboard and antenna cables or deforming the battery.

  • Apply firm, constant pressure to the battery using an opening pick.
  • Pry against the case directly above the daughterboard and antenna cables.

Be cautious not to deform the battery, as this may cause leaks or fires from soft-shell lithium-ion batteries.

Step 20

Slide opening pick up side of battery to break remaining adhesive.

  • Lift battery out of case.
  • Do not reuse removed battery — potential safety hazard.

  • Replace with new battery.

If using isopropyl alcohol, wait ten minutes for evaporation before installing new battery.
