Samsung Galaxy S8 Back Glass Replacement

Chances are your Samsung Galaxy S8's glass back is already damaged if it's been dropped with keys in the same pocket.

  • Determine if your replacement part comes with adhesive pre-mounted. If not, purchase adhesive for the rear glass and fingerprint reader separately.
  • Choose between pre-cut adhesive or thin high-bond tape for securing the new glass.

Step 1 | Back Glass Assembly

Step 1 image

Opening your phone will compromise its waterproof seals.

  • Prepare replacement adhesive before proceeding, or take care to avoid liquid exposure if reassembling without replacing it.

To heat the phone:

  • iOpener: Apply for about 2 minutes to a long edge of the S8. Reheat and reapply as needed.
  • Alternative methods: Use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but be cautious not to overheat, as this can damage the OLED display and internal battery.

While waiting for the adhesive to soften:

  • Move on to the next step and read about where to pry for reference.

Step 2

Locate the adhesive layout on the rear case as shown in the first image.

  • Cut through thick portions of adhesive using a suitable tool.
  • Avoid cutting thin areas of adhesive near the fingerprint sensor.

Prying on thin adhesive areas may damage nearby components.

Step 3

Apply a suction cup near the heated edge of the phone, avoiding the curved edge.

The suction cup may not seal well on the curved portion of the glass.

For cracked back covers or poor adhesion:

  • Try lifting with strong tape
  • Apply superglue to secure the suction cup and allow it to cure

Lift the suction cup, then insert an opening pick under the rear glass.

Due to curved glass, apply upward pressure rather than parallel to the phone's surface.

Step 4

Step 4 image

Reheat the iOpener and reapply it to soften the adhesive.

Step 5

Slide the opening pick down the side of the phone, separating the adhesive.

  • Go slowly to prevent the tool from slipping out of the seam.
  • If cutting becomes difficult, reheat and reapply the iOpener.

Continue applying heat to the remaining three sides, repeating the heating and cutting process.

Use a separate opening pick for each side, leaving it in place as you move on to the next to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Disconnect the fingerprint sensor cable before removing the rear glass.

  • Lift the rear glass and verify that the orange cable with a blue connector has disconnected.
  • If the fingerprint sensor cable is snagged, use a spudger to disconnect its connector before proceeding.
  • Use opening picks to slice through any remaining adhesive and open the phone slightly.

Do not open the phone further if the fingerprint sensor cable remains taut or snagged.

  • To reconnect the fingerprint sensor cable during reassembly, angle the back cover into position until the connector lines up perfectly.
  • Use a spudger to snap the connector into place by pressing it straight down.

Lift the rear glass from the phone.

Step 8

Peel remaining adhesive from phone chassis with tweezers.

Use high concentration isopropyl alcohol (at least 90%) and a lint-free cloth to clean adhesion areas.

  • Peel backing off new rear glass, then align one edge against phone chassis.
  • Firmly press glass onto phone.

Test your repair by turning on your phone before installing new adhesive and resealing the device.

Optional: Remove large chunks of old adhesive to ensure flush fit. Apply heat and pressure after installation for security, though waterproofing will be compromised.

  • If needed, transfer camera bezel to new part using our camera bezel replacement guide.

Step 9 | Fingerprint Sensor

Fingerprint sensor removal may damage adhesive, rendering it non-reusable.

  • Reheat an iOpener and apply it to the fingerprint sensor.
  • PUSH the fingerprint sensor off its adhesive from outside the glass.
  • If stubborn, use an opening pick to loosen the plastic backing's adhesive before pushing.
  • Attempt removal with finger pressure first.

Step 10

Step 10 image

Inspect the fingerprint sensor adhesive for damage.

  • If intact, it may be reused.
  • Otherwise, replace with pre-cut adhesive.

Clean edges of fingerprint sensor with high concentration isopropyl alcohol (at least 90%).

Use gloves when handling isopropyl alcohol to avoid skin irritation.

  • Apply new adhesive once clean.
