Samsung Galaxy S8+ Battery Replacement

A swollen battery can be hazardous — handle with extreme care.

  • Discharge the battery below 25% before disassembling your phone.
  • Never heat your phone or puncture a charged lithium-ion battery, as it may catch fire and/or explode.

If your battery is swollen, use caution when handling:

  • Wear eye protection and consider professional assistance if unsure how to proceed.
  • Alternatively, inject 90+% isopropyl alcohol around the edges of the back cover using a dropper or syringe to weaken adhesive.

Step 1 | Back Glass

Step 1 image

Opening your phone will compromise its waterproof seals; have replacement adhesive ready or take care to avoid liquid exposure.

  • Prepare an iOpener and heat the back of the phone along its left edge for about two minutes, then reapply as needed until warm.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but be cautious to avoid overheating the OLED display and internal battery.

Step 2

Prying or slicing near the fingerprint sensor flex cable may damage it.

  • Identify thick and thin adhesive portions as shown in the first image.
  • Slice through adhesive areas marked from outside, avoiding the region near the fingerprint sensor flex cable.

Step 3

Step 3 image

Avoid placing the suction cup on the curved edge of the glass for a good seal.

  • Secure a suction cup near the heated edge and apply gentle pressure.
  • If the back cover is cracked, use strong tape or superglue to ensure a secure hold.
  • Lift the left edge of the back cover with the suction cup, creating a small gap between the back cover and frame.

Be cautious when applying heat, as it may cool quickly and require repeated heating.

  • Use an iOpener according to its instructions to avoid overheating and bursting the gel pack.

Step 4

Step 4 image

Use caution when attempting to separate the glass, as excessive force or metal tools may cause breakage.

  • Insert an opening pick into the gap with care.
  • Optional: Add a few drops of isopropyl alcohol into the gap to weaken adhesive for subsequent steps.

Step 5

Step 5 image

Slide your opening pick along the left edge of the phone to slice through the adhesive.

  • The adhesive should now be partially removed, allowing for further disassembly.
  • To prevent re-adhesion, consider leaving the pick in place while proceeding to the next step.
  • Insert a second pick as you continue with the repair.

Step 6

  • Continue slicing through adhesive along bottom edge of phone.
  • Re-heat back cover as needed to prevent glue from cooling and hardening.

  • Insert pick farther into phone to fully separate glued area, which is larger here.
  • Consider leaving opening pick in place and grabbing another for the next step.

Step 7

Careful not to damage the fingerprint sensor's flex cable by inserting the pick too far.

  • Slice through the remaining adhesive along the top edge.
  • Slice through the remaining adhesive along the right side, using caution and consulting step 2's diagram for guidance if necessary.

Step 8

Do not attempt to remove the back cover in full.

  • Lift the back cover from its left edge, then hinge it open slightly.

Step 9

Be patient when reconnecting the fingerprint sensor cable.

  • Angle the back cover until the cable connector aligns with its socket.
  • Use a spudger to gently snap the connector into place by pressing straight down.

Avoid straining the cable, even if you have slender hands.

Step 11

Step 11 image

Apply caution when handling adhesive and sharp edges.

  • Remove any remaining adhesive from the phone's chassis using tweezers and high concentration isopropyl alcohol (at least 90%) on a lint-free cloth.
  • Peel the backing off of the new rear glass, then align one edge with the phone chassis and firmly press it into place.

Be sure to test your repair by turning on your phone before applying adhesive and resealing the phone.

  • If reinstalling without replacing adhesive, remove large chunks that may obstruct the back cover's fit.
  • Apply heat and pressure to secure the back cover; note that it will not be waterproof but should still hold securely due to the glue's strength.

Camera bezel transfer may also be required; consult our camera bezel replacement guide for assistance.

Step 12 | Disconnecting the Samsung Galaxy S8+ Battery

Step 12 image

Remove all eleven 3.7 mm Phillips screws from the wireless charging coil + antenna assembly.

If a screw is stuck and won't budge, carefully attempt to remove it with tweezers to avoid damaging the surrounding area.

Step 13

Step 13 image

Locate the wireless charging coil + antenna assembly and its retaining clips.

  • Insert a spudger into the marked release points and carefully pry up the plastic to dislodge the clips.
  • The clips should now be free, allowing you to remove the assembly.

Step 16 | Battery

Step 16 image

Be cautious when handling high-concentration isopropyl alcohol, as excessive use can damage the display.

  • Apply 1-2 drops of >90% isopropyl alcohol under each battery corner to help loosen adhesive.
  • Allow it to penetrate for several minutes before proceeding.

Using too much alcohol can damage the display, so proceed with caution.

  • Alternatively, heat an iOpener to its recommended temperature and apply directly behind the battery for 2 minutes.
  • Re-heat and reapply as needed to help soften adhesive.

Step 17

Step 17 image

Do not apply excessive force or use metal tools, as it may damage the soft-shell lithium-ion battery and risk chemical leakage, fire, or explosion.

  • Insert a couple of opening picks or a plastic card along the outer edge of the battery.
  • Apply steady, even pressure to slowly lever the battery up and out of the phone.

Step 18

Step 18 image

Do not reuse the removed battery as it poses a potential safety hazard.

  • Remove the battery.
  • Wait ten minutes for any isopropyl alcohol to completely evaporate before proceeding.
  • Install a new battery and follow this guide for installation instructions.
