Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus Back Glass Replacement

Additional materials may be required if adhesive is not pre-mounted on replacement parts.

  • Check if your replacement part comes with adhesive.
  • If not, purchase adhesive for the rear glass and fingerprint reader separately.
    • Select either pre-cut adhesive or thin high-bond tape.

Step 1 | Back Glass

Step 1 image

Opening your phone compromises its waterproof seals.

  • Prepare replacement adhesive before proceeding or ensure you can avoid liquid exposure during reassembly.
  • Heat the left edge of the back with an iOpener for about two minutes to soften the adhesive.
  • Reheat and reapply as needed, following iOpener instructions to prevent overheating.

Use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate carefully, avoiding overheat damage to the OLED display and internal battery.

Be cautious when cutting through adhesive — risk of damage to internal components.

  • Cut through thick sections of adhesive with a sharp tool.
  • Proceed with caution in areas where adhesive is thin.
  • Avoid the area covering the fingerprint sensor flex cable to prevent damage.

Step 3

Secure a suction cup to the back cover near the heated edge.

Avoid placing it on the curved portion of the glass for a good seal.

  • If the back cover is cracked, try using strong tape or superglue the suction cup in place and let it cure before proceeding.

Lift the left edge of the back cover with your suction cup to create a small gap between the back cover and the frame.

Apply significant force if necessary, but only open a slight gap for tool insertion.

  • If needed, apply more heat to soften the adhesive, then try again.
  • Be cautious with repeated heating as the adhesive cools quickly.

If using an iOpener, follow its instructions to avoid overheating and bursting the gel pack.

Step 4

Risk of damage if excessive force or metal tools are used.

  • Insert an opening pick into the gap carefully.
  • Optional: Add a few drops of isopropyl alcohol to aid in adhesive separation.

  • Slide a pick along the left edge of the phone to cut through adhesive.
  • Leave the pick in place to prevent re-adhesion of loose glue.

  • Grab a second pick as you move forward.

Step 6

Continue slicing through the adhesive along the bottom edge of the phone.

Re-heat the back cover as needed to prevent glue from cooling and hardening.

  • Insert pick farther into phone to fully separate glued area, which is larger here.
  • Consider leaving opening pick in place and grabbing another for the next step.

Be cautious not to damage the fingerprint sensor's flex cable when removing adhesive.

  • Slice through the remaining adhesive along the top edge with a pick.
  • Slice through the remaining adhesive along the right side with a pick, taking care to avoid the fingerprint sensor's flex cable.

Do not completely remove the back cover yet.

  • Lift the back cover from its left edge.
  • Hinge the back cover open slightly.

Use the pointed end of the spudger to carefully pry up the fingerprint sensor flex cable.

Align back cover in reassembly until fingerprint sensor cable connector lines up over socket.

  • Flat spudger: Press connector straight down to snap into place, being gentle to avoid straining cable.
  • If hands are slender, you can press connector into place with a finger, but be careful not to strain the cable.
  • Patience and practice are required; do not rush or force the connector.

Step 11

Step 11 image

Be sure to test your repair before reassembling.

  • Tweezers remove any remaining adhesive from the phone chassis.
  • Clean adhesion areas with high concentration isopropyl alcohol (at least 90%) and a lint-free cloth.
  • Peel adhesive backing, align one edge of new rear glass to phone chassis, and firmly press onto the phone.

If reusing the back cover, remove large chunks of old adhesive to ensure flush fit.

  • Apply heat and pressure to secure the back cover in place.
  • Camera bezel transfer may be required; follow camera bezel replacement guide if necessary.

Transfer the fingerprint sensor as follows:

  • Apply iOpener to soften adhesive on fingerprint sensor.

  • Push gently but firmly against fingerprint sensor from outward-facing side until adhesive separates.
  • If stuck, apply more heat or carefully use a pick to cut some of the adhesive along edge.

Step 13

Step 13 image

Inspect the fingerprint sensor adhesive for damage.

  • If intact, consider reusing it; otherwise, remove the old adhesive.
  • Clean the edges of the fingerprint sensor with high concentration isopropyl alcohol (at least 90%).
  • Apply new adhesive to the cleaned area.
