Avoid overheating, as this may damage the OLED display, battery, or other internal components.

  • Apply gentle heat from a heat gun, iFixit iOpener, hair dryer, or hot plate to soften adhesive along back edges for approximately one minute.
  • Handle the metal frame carefully as it may become hot during this process.

Insert a Jimmy tool under the edge of the back cover.

A suction handle is ineffective on this textured surface; do not rely on it for grip.

  • Insert an opening pick into the seam to prevent the seam from closing if the Jimmy tool slips or is removed accidentally.

Cut slowly around the top section, avoiding cables for fingerprint sensor and camera. Do not pry too far into the device's top to protect the fingerprint sensor.

  • Slide the Jimmy tool down the sides of the device, separating the adhesive.

Use a pick to slice through any remaining adhesive.

If using replacement adhesive strips, carefully remove excess adhesive with a Jimmy tool.

  • Open the back cover just enough to access the fingerprint sensor flex cable connector.
  • The fingerprint sensor cable is located near the front-facing camera; gently pull the back cover off to avoid damaging it.
