Failure to discharge the battery below 25% before disassembly may result in a fire/explosion hazard.

  • Prepare replacement adhesive for reattaching the back cover.
  • Check if any of the following warrant daughterboard replacement: damaged USB-C connector or microphone.
  • Charge the battery below 25% before disassembling to minimize risk of battery fire/explosion.

Removing the back cover may compromise waterproof seals — ensure you have replacement adhesive or avoid liquid exposure during reassembly.

  • Remove four 3mm black screws using a TR6 Torx Security Screwdriver, located on the outside edges.
  • Take off the rubber bumpers from the top and bottom edges of the device.

Step 3

Never apply too much heat, as this may damage the OLED display, battery, or other internal components.

  • Use a heat gun or other approved heating tool (iFixit iOpener, hair dryer, hot plate) to lightly warm the back edges for approximately one minute.
  • Heat should soften the adhesive connecting the back cover to the frame without overheating the device.

Step 4

Insert a Jimmy tool under the edge of the back cover.

A suction handle will not provide grip due to the back cover's texture.

  • Insert an opening pick into the seam to prevent accidental closure, if the Jimmy tool is removed or slips.

Slowly cut around the top section of the device, avoiding cables for the fingerprint sensor and camera. Do not pry too far to protect the fingerprint sensor.

  • Slide the Jimmy tool down the sides, separating the adhesive.

Step 5

Use a opening pick to cut through any remaining adhesive.

  • If using replacement adhesive strips, remove excess adhesive from the device frame with the Jimmy tool.
  • Open the back cover slightly to expose the fingerprint sensor flex cable connector.
  • The fingerprint sensor cable is near the front-facing camera; gently pull off the back cover to avoid damaging it.
