  • You will need replacement adhesive for the back cover, as it must be removed during this procedure.

Removing the back cover will breach its waterproof seals, so have replacement adhesive ready or protect the device from liquids during reassembly.

  • Take off the rubber bumpers from the top and bottom edges of the device.

Step 3

Use a heat gun or alternative heating tool (iFixit iOpener, hair dryer, hot plate) to lightly heat back edges for 1 minute.

Avoid overheating, which can damage the OLED display, battery, and other internal parts.

Be cautious when handling a hot metal frame with these heating tools.

Insert the Jimmy tool under the edge of the back cover.

A suction handle may not provide a secure grip due to the texture of the back cover.

  • Insert an opening pick into the seam to prevent closure in case the Jimmy tool slips or is removed accidentally.
  • Slowly cut around the top section, avoiding cables for fingerprint sensor and camera. Be cautious not to damage these components.
  • Slide the Jimmy tool down the sides, gently separating the adhesive.

  • If using replacement strips, remove remaining adhesive with a Jimmy tool.
  • Open back cover slightly to expose fingerprint sensor flex cable connector.
  • (Avoid damaging the cable by pulling gently.)

The fingerprint sensor cable is located near the front-facing camera. Pull the back cover off carefully to avoid tearing it.
