Removing the back cover will compromise its waterproof seals; have replacement adhesive ready or avoid liquid exposure.

  • Take off the rubber bumpers from the top and bottom edges of the device.

Step 3

Step 3 image

Apply gentle heat to the back edges using a heat gun, iFixit iOpener, hair dryer, or hot plate to loosen the adhesive.

  • Heat for approximately one minute to avoid damaging internal components, such as the OLED display and battery.
  • Be cautious when handling a hot metal frame; excessive heat can cause damage.
  • Use care not to overheat the device.

Insert a Jimmy tool under the edge of the back cover.

A suction handle may not provide sufficient grip due to the texture of the back cover.

  • Insert an opening pick into the seam to prevent closure in case of Jimmy tool removal or slippage.
  • Cut slowly around the top section, avoiding cables for the fingerprint sensor and camera.
  • Avoid prying too far to protect the fingerprint sensor.

Slide the Jimmy tool down the sides, separating the adhesive.

Step 5

Step 5 image

Use a pick to cut through any remaining adhesive.

  • If using replacement strips, remove excess adhesive from the frame with a Jimmy tool.
  • Open the back cover just enough to expose the fingerprint sensor cable connector.
  • The fingerprint sensor flex cable is located near the top, by the front-facing camera. Gently pull the back cover off to avoid damaging the cable.

To avoid damaging the phone, never use excessive heat.

  • Apply a heated iOpener to each edge of the phone for about 90 seconds to loosen the display adhesive.
  • If necessary, reheat the iOpener.
  • A hair dryer or heat gun can also be used; however, it will make the metal frame extremely hot.

Locate the middle of the display's bottom half.

Press in the suction handle firmly until it engages.

  • Pull up on the suction cup to create a small gap between the display and frame.
  • Even if your display is cracked, the suction cup will still lift the entire assembly as one piece.

Step 13

  • Insert the opening pick into the gap between the display and the frame.
  • Use a suction cup to create the gap if it is not already open.
