Compromising the waterproof seals by removing the back cover may result in water damage.

  • Have replacement adhesive ready or avoid exposure to liquids when reassembling the device.

Remove four black 3mm screws from the outside edges using a TR6 Torx Security Screwdriver.

  • Take off the rubber bumpers from the top and bottom edges of the device.

Step 3

Apply gentle heat to the back edges using a heat gun, iFixit iOpener, hair dryer, or hot plate.

  • Heat for about one minute to soften adhesive.
  • Be cautious, as metal frame may become hot.

Avoid overheating, which can damage OLED display, battery, or internal components.

Insert a Jimmy tool under the edge of the back cover.

A suction handle will not provide sufficient grip due to the texture of the back cover.

  • Insert an opening pick into the seam, holding it in place if needed.
  • Carefully cut around the top section with a slow and steady motion.

Be cautious not to damage cables for the fingerprint sensor and camera.

  • Slide the Jimmy tool down both sides, carefully separating the adhesive.

Step 5

Use the opening pick to cut through any remaining adhesive.

  • If replacing adhesive strips, remove leftover adhesive from the frame with a Jimmy tool.
  • Open the back cover slightly until you see the fingerprint sensor flex cable connector.
  • Pull the back cover off gently to avoid damaging the finger print sensor cable, which is located near the front-facing camera at the top of the phone.

Flip the cover over slowly and set it aside.

  • Disconnect the fingerprint flex cable with the flat end of a spudger.
  • Remove the back cover.

When reassembling, align the back cover to ensure proper alignment of the fingerprint sensor cable.

Step 11

Step 11 image

Position a heated iOpener across the top of the battery for 3 minutes to loosen adhesive.

  • If you have multiple iOpeners, place one on the screen side as well.
  • Alternatively, apply 1-2 drops of high-concentration isopropyl alcohol under each corner of the battery and let it penetrate for several minutes.

Using too much alcohol can damage the display.

  • As an alternative, use a hair dryer or heat gun to soften adhesive, but be cautious not to overheat the battery.
  • The metal frame will become hot; handle with care.

Industrial-grade adhesive requires firm pressure — risk of damage.

  • Use a spudger's flat end with steady pressure to pry up on the battery's bottom.
  • Wait ten minutes after isopropyl alcohol treatment before installing the new battery to allow complete evaporation.
