Step 3 | iOpener Heating

Step 3 image

Clean the microwave first to prevent debris from adhering to the iOpener.

  • Position the iOpener centrally in the microwave.
  • For carousel microwaves, ensure the turntable spins freely to avoid overheating and damage.

Step 4

Step 4 image

Be cautious not to overheat the iOpener, as this may cause it to burst.

  • Heat the iOpener in the microwave for 30 seconds.
  • Reheating time may vary based on your microwave's wattage.

The iOpener is ready when it's just too hot to touch lightly.

  • During repairs, reheat the iOpener as needed for up to 10 minutes.
  • Do not attempt to heat above 100 ̊C (212 ̊F).

Never touch a swollen or still excessively hot iOpener.

Step 5

Step 5 image

When removing the iOpener from the microwave, use a flat end to handle, as the center is extremely hot.

  • Hold the iOpener by one of the two flat ends only.
  • Be cautious when handling, and consider using an oven mitt for protection.

Step 6 | Alternate iOpener heating method

Step 6 image

Heat iOpener using boiling water if microwave is not available:

  • Never handle the iOpener with your bare hands, as it will be extremely hot.

Fill a pot or pan with enough water to fully submerge an iOpener.
  • Heat the water to a boil and turn off the heat source.
  • iOpener should be submerged in the hot water for 2-3 minutes.
  • Use tongs to carefully remove the heated iOpener from the pot.
  • Dry the iOpener thoroughly with a towel before use.

When handling the heated iOpener, only hold by the end tabs.

Step 7 | Rear Glass

Opening your phone will compromise its waterproof seals.

  • Have replacement adhesive ready before proceeding, or exercise caution to avoid liquid exposure upon reassembly.

If the glass is shattered, apply packing tape over the entire panel to secure it during removal.

  • Lay a heated iOpener on the rear panel for about two minutes to loosen adhesive around the edge of the glass.
  • Reheat and reapply as necessary to achieve desired temperature.

To avoid overheating, refer to the iOpener instructions.

  • Shift the iOpener to heat the remaining panel for another two minutes.
  • Air blower, heat gun, or hot plate may also be used, but exercise caution: OLED display and internal battery are susceptible to heat damage.

Step 8

Apply a suction cup near the bottom edge of the rear glass when it's hot to the touch.

  • Lift on the suction cup to create a small gap underneath the rear glass.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap.
  • Optional: Add a few drops of isopropyl alcohol into the gap for easier adhesive separation.

Step 9

Slide the pick along the bottom edge of the phone to cut through adhesive.

  • Leave the pick in place to prevent re-adhesion of the separated glue.
  • Re-heat the rear glass as needed to prevent the glue from hardening.

Step 10

Repeat the heating and cutting process on the remaining three sides.

  • Apply a new opening pick to each edge, but do not remove existing ones.
  • This will prevent resealing of the adhesive.

Step 11

  • Apply an opening pick to gently slice through any residual adhesive.
  • Proceed by removing the rear glass.

Remove any remaining adhesive from the phone's chassis with tweezers.

  • Clean the adhesion areas with isopropyl alcohol (at least 90%) and a lint-free cloth, swiping in one direction only.
  • Peel the adhesive backing off of the new rear glass and align it to the phone chassis.
  • Firmly press the glass onto the phone, ensuring proper alignment.

Step 13 | Midframe Assembly

Remove the 13 x 3.5mm Phillips #00 screws securing the midframe.

Ensure SIM card tray is ejected.

  • Firmly grasp the midframe assembly's edge.
  • Lift up on midframe while pushing down on battery to separate it from phone.

Avoid snagging midframe on audio jack or charging port.

  • Run an opening pick around edges of phone to separate top of midframe, being careful not to insert between glass and display.

Remove top of midframe first to avoid damage to headphone jack. Push midframe down after removal.

May need to heat with iOpener and apply adhesive remover for difficult midframe separation.

Step 15

Use both hands to carefully lift the midframe assembly upward, creating space between it and the surrounding components.
