Samsung Galaxy S6 Rear Facing Camera Replacement

Removing the rear glass will destroy its adhesive and render reinstallation impossible.

  • Follow this guide to replace the rear-facing camera on your Samsung Galaxy S6.
  • Rear glass must be removed for access.
  • Follow a separate guide for proper reinstallation of the rear glass.

Step 1 | SIM Card

Do not press too hard when ejecting the SIM card tray — risk of damaging it.

  • Insert a paper clip or SIM eject tool into the hole on the power button side of the phone.
  • Press to eject the SIM card tray.

Remove the SIM card tray.

Step 3 | iOpener Heating

Step 3 image

Any residue on the microwave's bottom may adhere to the iOpener.

  • Ensure the microwave is clean before proceeding.

Place the iOpener in the center of the microwave.

  • For carousel microwaves:
    • Verify that the plate spins freely to prevent overheating or burning of the iOpener.

Step 4

Step 4 image

Do not attempt to heat the iOpener above 100 ̊C (212 ̊F) — risk of bursting.

  • Heat the iOpener in the microwave for 30 seconds, adjusting time based on wattage as needed.
  • The iOpener is ready when it's just too hot to touch.
  • Throughout the repair, reheat the iOpener every 10 minutes or as needed until it cools down.

Never use an iOpener that has swollen due to overheating — risk of electric shock and damage.

Step 5

Step 5 image

Be cautious when handling the extremely hot iOpener.

Remove the iOpener from the microwave using one of the two flat ends to avoid the center.

  • Use an oven mitt for protection, if needed, when handling the hot iOpener.

Step 6 | Alternate iOpener heating method

Step 6 image

Careful handling required: extremely hot temperatures.

  • Fill a pot or pan with enough boiling water to submerge an iOpener.
  • Turn off the heat and place an iOpener into the hot water for 2-3 minutes, ensuring it's fully submerged.
  • Use tongs to carefully remove the heated iOpener from the water.
  • Dry the iOpener thoroughly with a towel before use.
  • Be cautious when handling the extremely hot iOpener.

Step 7 | Rear Glass

Step 7 image

Opening your phone will compromise its waterproof seals.

  • Have replacement adhesive ready before proceeding, or avoid liquid exposure if reassembling without replacing it.
  • If the glass is shattered, cover the entire panel with packing tape to hold it together during removal.

Lay the heated iOpener over the rear panel for two minutes to loosen the adhesive around the edge of the glass.

You may need to reheat and reapply the iOpener several times to get the phone warm enough; follow the instructions to avoid overheating.

  • Shift the iOpener to heat the remaining section for another two minutes.
  • A hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate may be used, but be careful not to overheat the phone (OLED display and internal battery are susceptible to heat damage).

Step 8

Apply a suction cup near the bottom edge when rear glass feels hot.

  • Lift suction cup to create a small gap underneath the rear glass.
  • opening pick into the gap created.

  • Optionally, add a few drops of isopropyl alcohol for easier adhesive separation.

Step 9

Step 9 image

Slide the pick along the bottom edge of the phone to slice through the adhesive securing the rear glass.

  • Leave the pick in place and grab a second pick as you proceed to the next step.
  • Re-heat the rear glass as needed to prevent the glue from cooling and hardening.

Leaving the pick inserted can help prevent the glue from re-adhering, but if it does, simply repeat this process.

Step 10

Step 10 image

Repeat the heating and cutting process for all other edges.

  • Apply a new opening pick to each adjacent edge, keeping the previous one in place.
  • This prevents re-adhesion of the adhesive.

Step 11

Step 11 image

Use an opening pick to slice through any remaining adhesive.

  • Remove the rear glass.

Step 12

Step 12 image

Remove any remaining adhesive from the phone's chassis using tweezers.

  • Clean the adhesion areas with high concentration isopropyl alcohol (at least 90%) and a lint-free cloth, swiping in one direction only.
  • Peel the adhesive backing off of the new rear glass and align one edge with the phone chassis.
  • Firmly press the glass onto the phone, ensuring proper adhesion.

Ensure isopropyl alcohol is used at a concentration of at least 90% to prevent damage to the phone's surface.

Step 13 | Midframe Assembly

Step 13 image

Remove the 13 3.5mm Phillips #00 screws holding the midframe in place.

Step 14

Step 14 image

Ensure SIM card tray is ejected before proceeding.

  • Firmly grasp the edge of the midframe assembly.
  • Lift up on the midframe while pushing down on the battery to separate from the phone body.
  • Avoid snagging the midframe on the audio jack or charging port.
  • Run an opening pick around the edges to separate the top of the midframe.
  • Avoid inserting the pick between the glass and display.
  • To avoid headphone jack damage, remove the top of the midframe first and then push it down.

  • If separation is difficult, heat the edges with an iOpener to soften display adhesive.

Step 15

Step 15 image

Lift the midframe assembly up to disengage it from the rest of the phone.
