Step 3 | iOpener Heating

Clean your microwave before proceeding to avoid nasty gunk sticking to the iOpener.

  • Place the iOpener in the center of the microwave.
  • For carousel microwaves: Ensure the plate spins freely to prevent overheating and burning.

Step 4

Step 4 image

Do not overheat the iOpener above 100 °C (212 °F) as this may cause it to burst.

  • Heat the iOpener for thirty seconds in your microwave.
  • Reheat every thirty seconds or as needed during the repair, if the iOpener cools down.
  • The iOpener is ready when it's barely too hot to touch.
  • A properly heated iOpener stays warm for up to 10 minutes and can be reused without reheating until then.
  • Never touch the iOpener if it appears swollen

Step 5

Step 5 image

Handle the hot iOpener with care and use an oven mitt as needed.

  • Remove the iOpener from the microwave, gripping one of the flat ends to avoid the center.
  • Hold the iOpener by its flat end due to the hot central area.

Step 6 | Alternate iOpener heating method

Step 6 image

To heat an iOpener without a microwave, follow these steps carefully.

  • Fully submerge an iOpener in boiling water by filling a pot or pan with enough water.
  • Heat the water to a boil and then turn off the heat source.
  • Soak the iOpener for 2-3 minutes, ensuring it's fully submerged.
  • Use tongs to carefully extract the heated iOpener from the hot water.
  • Dry the iOpener thoroughly with a towel before handling.
  • Be cautious: hold only the end tabs of the very hot iOpener.

For repeated use, reheat the iOpener following these same steps: boil water, turn off heat, and soak for 2-3 minutes.

Step 7 | Rear Glass

Opening your phone will compromise its waterproof seals.

  • Have replacement adhesive ready before proceeding or take care to avoid liquid exposure if reassembling without replacing the adhesive.

  • Apply packing tape over shattered glass to hold it together during removal.

Lay the heated iOpener on the rear panel for 2 minutes to loosen adhesive around the edge of the glass.

  • iOpener may need reheating and reapplication several times to warm phone sufficiently. Follow instructions to avoid overheating.
  • Shift the iOpener to heat remaining panel section for another 2 minutes.
  • Alternative heating methods (hair dryer, heat gun, hot plate) may be used but be careful not to overheat phone.

Step 8

Apply a suction cup near the bottom edge of the rear glass when it's hot.

  • Lift on the suction cup to create a small gap underneath the glass.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap.

Optional: Add a few drops of isopropyl alcohol to help weaken the adhesive, if desired.

Step 9

Slide a pick along the phone's bottom edge to cut adhesive securing rear glass.

Leaving the pick in place can help prevent re-adhesion of separated glue.

  • Re-heat the rear glass as needed to keep glue from cooling and hardening.
  • Proceed with a second pick, if necessary, leaving first pick inserted for support.

Apply the heating and cutting procedure to the remaining three sides.

  • Do not remove the screen opening picks from the other edges.
  • Leave one pick under each edge, angled slightly inward, to keep adhesive open.

Insert an opening pick to cut through remaining adhesive.

  • Continue inserting the pick until you reach the edge of the glass.
  • Lift and remove the rear glass.

Remove remaining adhesive from the phone's chassis using tweezers.

  • Clean adhesion areas with high concentration isopropyl alcohol (at least 90%) and a lint-free cloth, swiping in one direction only.
  • Peel adhesive backing off the new rear glass and align one edge to the phone chassis. Press firmly onto the phone.

Step 13 | Midframe Assembly

Ensure the SIM card tray has been ejected.

  • Firmly grasp the edge of the midframe assembly.
  • Lift up on the midframe while pushing down on the battery to separate it from the rest of the phone.

Avoid snagging the midframe on the audio jack or charging port.

  • Run an opening pick around the edges to partially separate the top of the midframe.
  • Avoid inserting the pick between the glass and display.

Remove the top of the midframe first to avoid damaging the headphone jack.

  • Push the midframe downwards to disengage it from the headphone jack.
  • If necessary, use an iOpener with heat to soften display adhesive for easier separation.

Step 15

Step 15 image

Separate the midframe assembly from the rest of the phone by lifting it.

  • Use a firm but gentle motion, working your way around the edges.

Step 16 | Power Button

Use angled tweezers to grasp the power button bracket.

  • Pull it out of its socket carefully.
  • Only remove the power button bracket from the socket, as the ribbon cable remains attached to the midframe.
  • Avoid pulling too hard, or you risk damaging the ribbon cable.

Step 17

Never attempt to lift the entire power button assembly, as it may damage the spring contacts.

  • Lightly pull up on the power button ribbon cable until only the spring contacts remain attached to the midframe.
