Samsung Galaxy S6 Earpiece Speaker Assembly Replacement

Removing the rear glass will damage its adhesive and render reinstallation impossible.

  • Replace the earpiece speaker assembly, which includes a speaker, microphone, IR blaster, and ambient light sensor.
  • Remove the rear glass to access the required components.
  • Reinstall the rear glass using this guide.

Step 1 | SIM Card

Be gentle when pressing the SIM ejector — risk of damaging the SIM card tray.

  • Insert a paper clip or SIM eject tool into the hole on the power button side.
  • Press the tool to gently eject the SIM card tray.

Step 2

Step 2 image

Open your phone's SIM card tray.

  • Locate and gently push the SIM ejector pin into the hole on the top of your phone, located beside the charging port.
  • The tray will slide out; carefully remove it from your phone.

Step 3 | iOpener Heating

Step 3 image

Cleaning the microwave first will prevent gunk from sticking to the iOpener.

  • Position the iOpener in the center of the microwave.
  • For carousel microwaves: Ensure the plate spins freely to avoid overheating or burning the iOpener.

Step 4

Step 4 image

Do not attempt to heat the iOpener above 100 ̊C (212 ̊F) or it may burst.

Never touch a swollen or overheated iOpener.

  • Heat the iOpener in the microwave for 30 seconds initially, adjusting time based on your microwave's wattage.
  • A heated iOpener is barely too hot to touch. Reheat as needed in 30-second increments throughout the repair.
  • If reheating is required, wait up to 10 minutes for a properly heated iOpener to stay warm.

Step 5

Step 5 image

Be cautious when removing and handling the iOpener as it may be extremely hot.

  • Hold the iOpener by one of its two flat ends to avoid the hot center.
  • If necessary, use an oven mitt for added protection when handling the iOpener.

Step 6 | Alternate iOpener heating method

Step 6 image

Do not use high temperatures with an iOpener — risk of damage.

  • Fill a pot or pan with enough boiling water to submerge an iOpener.
  • Turn off the heat, and carefully place an iOpener into the hot water for 2-3 minutes.
  • Use tongs to extract the iOpener from the water.
  • Dry the iOpener thoroughly with a towel.
  • Holding only by the end tabs, handle the very hot iOpener carefully.

To reheat the iOpener: Repeat this process to reactivate it.

Step 7 | Rear Glass

Step 7 image

Opening your phone will compromise its waterproof seals.

  • Prepare replacement adhesive before proceeding, or take precautions against liquid exposure when reassembling without it.
  • Apply packing tape over shattered glass panels for removal.

Avoid overheating the phone when using heat to loosen adhesives.

  • Lay the iOpener on the rear panel for about two minutes to loosen adhesive around the edge of the glass.
  • Reapply and reheat as necessary, following the iOpener instructions to avoid overheating.

Take care when using alternative heat sources: a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate may cause damage to the OLED display and internal battery if overheated.

Step 8

Apply a suction cup near the bottom edge of the rear glass when it's hot.

  • Lift on the suction cup to create a small gap underneath the rear glass.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap created.
  • Optionally, add a few drops of isopropyl alcohol to help weaken the adhesive.

Step 9

Step 9 image

Slide the pick along the bottom edge of the phone to slice through the adhesive securing the rear glass.

  • Leave the pick in place, then grab a second pick, for better control over the process.
  • Re-heat the rear glass as needed to prevent the glue from cooling and hardening.
  • Re-heating may be necessary periodically to maintain adhesive separation and prevent re-adhesion.

Step 10

For each of the remaining three sides, repeat the heating and cutting process.

  • Under each side, place an opening pick to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Step 11

Insert an opening pick into the gap and use it to carefully slice through any remaining adhesive.

  • Continue inserting the opening pick until all adhesive is removed.
  • Once free, set the rear glass aside for reinstallation.

Step 12

Use tweezers to remove remaining adhesive from the phone's chassis.

  • Clean adhesion areas with high concentration isopropyl alcohol (at least 90%) and a lint-free cloth. Swipe in one direction only, not back and forth.
  • Peel off the new rear glass's adhesive backing and align one edge of the glass with the phone chassis.
  • Firmly press the glass onto the phone.

For old or non-adhesive pre-installed rear glass, follow this guide for reinstallation instructions.

Step 13 | Midframe Assembly

Step 13 image

Remove thirteen 3.5mm Phillips #00 screws from the phone's midframe.

Step 14

Step 14 image

Ensure SIM card tray is ejected.

  • Firmly grasp the midframe assembly edge.
  • Lift up on midframe and push down on battery to separate.
  • Avoid snagging audio jack or charging port during lifting.

Careful not to insert opening pick between glass and display.

  • Run an opening pick around edges to separate top of midframe.
  • Remove top of midframe before pushing downwards to disengage from headphone jack.

May need heat and iOpener on display edges if separation is difficult due to adhesive issues.

Step 15

Step 15 image

Use both hands to lift the middframe upwards, creating space between the midframe and the rest of the device.

Use tweezers to carefully lift the assembly out of its socket.

  • This assembly includes multiple components:
    • A speaker on a separate PCB
    • A microphone on another PCB
    • An IR blaster on yet another PCB
    • An ambient light sensor also on its own PCB
