Samsung Galaxy S6 Display Frame Replacement

Removing the rear glass will destroy its adhesive and may require reinstallation steps found in a separate guide.

  • Separate the display frame from the display assembly.
  • Remove the earpiece speaker, motherboard, daughterboard, and vibrator from the display frame.

Step 1 | SIM Card

Careful not to apply excessive pressure, which can harm the SIM card tray.

  • Insert a paper clip or SIM eject tool into the hole in the SIM card slot on the power button side of the phone.
  • Gently press until the SIM card tray is ejected.

Locate and pull out the SIM card tray.

Step 3 | iOpener Heating

Clean the microwave thoroughly before proceeding, as debris on the bottom can adhere to the iOpener.

  • Position the iOpener in the center of the microwave.
  • (For carousel microwaves only): Ensure the plate spins freely to prevent overheating and damage.

Do not overheat the iOpener above 100°C (212°F) as it may burst.

  • Heat the iOpener in the microwave for 30 seconds.

  • Reheat the iOpener every 10 minutes during the repair procedure, warming it up in 30-second increments as needed.

  • If the iOpener appears swollen or is too hot to touch, do not use it until it has cooled down.

  • The iOpener should stay warm for up to 10 minutes after heating.

Careful handling required: The iOpener will be extremely hot.

  • Hold the iOpener by one of its flat ends, away from the center.
  • Use an oven mitt if necessary for protection when removing from microwave.

Step 6 | Alternate iOpener heating method

Fill a pot or pan with enough boiling water to submerge an iOpener.

  • Heat the water to a boil, then turn off the heat.
  • Submerge an iOpener in the hot water for 2-3 minutes.
  • Use tongs to extract the heated iOpener.

The iOpener will be very hot, handle it carefully by the end tabs only.

Thoroughly dry the iOpener with a towel before use.

Opening your phone will compromise its waterproof seals.

  • Have replacement adhesive ready before proceeding to avoid liquid exposure upon reassembly.
  • If glass is shattered, apply packing tape over the panel for secure removal.

Apply heated iOpener to rear panel edge for approximately two minutes to loosen adhesive.

  • May need to reheat and reapply iOpener several times to achieve optimal temperature.
  • Follow manufacturer's iOpener instructions to avoid overheating.

Be cautious when using alternative heat sources (hair dryer, heat gun, hot plate) to prevent damage to OLED display and internal battery.

  • Apply heat for another two minutes to remaining panel section.

Apply a suction cup near the bottom edge of the rear glass when it's hot.

  • Lift on the suction cup to create a small gap underneath the glass.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap.
  • (Optional): Add a few drops of isopropyl alcohol to the gap for extra adhesive weakening.

Slide the pick along the bottom edge of the phone to slice through the adhesive securing the rear glass.

Leaving the pick inserted may help prevent re-adhesion of the separated glue.

  • Re-heat the rear glass as needed to keep the adhesive loose and pliable.

Apply the heating and cutting procedure to all sides, except the one you have already accessed.

  • Use a tool to create a gap on each side, starting with the bottom edge.
  • Insert an opening pick under each edge to keep the adhesive from sealing again.

  • Use an opening pick to carefully slice through any remaining adhesive.
  • Once cleared, remove the rear glass.

Remove any remaining adhesive from the phone's chassis with tweezers.

  • Clean the adhesion areas with isopropyl alcohol (at least 90%) and a lint-free cloth, swiping in one direction only.
  • Peel off the adhesive backing from the new rear glass and align one edge against the phone chassis.
  • Firmly press the new rear glass onto the phone.

Step 13 | Midframe Assembly

Remove thirteen 3.5mm Phillips #00 screws securing the midframe.

Ensure the SIM card tray has been ejected.

  • Firmly grasp the edge of the midframe assembly.
  • Lift up on the midframe assembly, pushing down on the battery to separate it from the rest of the phone.
  • Avoid snagging the midframe on the audio jack or charging port.

  • Run an opening pick around the edges, separating the top of the midframe from the rest of the phone.
  • Be cautious not to insert the pick between the glass and display.

Remove the top of the midframe first to avoid damaging the headphone jack.

  • Push down on the midframe after removing the top to disengage it from the headphone jack.
  • If necessary, apply heat and an iOpener to soften the display adhesive for easier separation.

Step 15

Use your hands or a flat tool, such as a plastic spudger, to carefully lift the midframe assembly away from the other components.

Disconnect the battery connector from the motherboard using the flat end of a spudger.

Avoid bending the battery, which could release hazardous chemicals.

  • Insert a plastic opening pick between the case and the battery.
  • Push the pick in further to separate the battery from the phone.

Do not pry against the motherboard or you may damage the phone.

  • If the battery is too strongly adhered, use a warm iOpener over the battery to loosen it.
  • Alternatively, apply isopropyl alcohol under each corner of the battery and let it penetrate for several minutes.

Never reinsert an old battery in the phone, this poses a significant safety risk.

  • Remove the battery from the phone.
  • Dispose of the removed battery responsibly.
  • Acquire and prepare a new battery.
  • Continue with installing the new battery and its accompanying adhesive, following the instructions provided for the installation process.

Disengage the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi antenna cables using the pointed end of a spudger.

Separate the camera-side end of the motherboard from the display frame.

  • Move any obstructing ribbon cables out of the way while lifting.

If the board is hard to lift, ensure it's fully disconnected and not caught on ribbon cables.

Do not remove the motherboard yet; it remains attached via a ribbon cable under the board.

Badly cracked display glass requires protective tape before prying.

  • Reheat the iOpener.
  • Lay the iOpener across the S6 display for two minutes, then move it to the other half of the screen.
  • You may need to reapply and reheat multiple times to achieve adequate warmth. Refer to the iOpener instructions to prevent overheating.

Insert the opening pick in the battery-side edge of the phone, at an upward angle.

  • Position the pick between the frame and display.
  • A gap should form between the display frame and the display assembly when done correctly.

If you see the pick through the glass, it means you've applied too much pressure; remove the pick and start again.

  • Slide a pick along the edge of the display to separate the adhesive underneath.
  • Stop before reaching the daughterboard to avoid damaging the capacitive button underneath.

  • If cutting becomes difficult, reheat and reapply the iOpener.

Leave the pick in place to prevent the display from re-adhering to the frame.

Slide the pick along the bottom edge of the phone from the headphone jack to just past the charging port.

Do not insert the opening pick more than 0.25 inches (~6mm) to avoid damaging the home button.

Insert an opening pick about 0.5 inches (~12mm) under the bottom corner of the display near the headphone jack.

  • Keep a close eye on the button's ribbon cable to avoid tearing it.
  • If the pick is hard to insert or the cable starts to stretch, apply more heat.

The ribbon cable is fragile and can be easily damaged.

  • Leave the pick under the display to prevent re-adhesion of the button.
  • If either the capacitive buttons or ribbon cables are damaged, you can replace the daughterboard assembly.

  • Insert a picking tool about 0.5 inches (~12mm) under the opposite bottom corner of the display.
  • Carefully monitor the ribbon cable as you insert the pick, taking care not to tear it.
  • If the cable starts to stretch or the pick is hard to insert, apply additional heat.

  • Leave the pick in place to prevent the button from re-adhering to the display.

Insert an opening pick on the side of the phone opposite the battery and slide it along the edge to loosen the adhesive.

Do not remove the pick until you have completed the repair, as re-adhesion may occur otherwise.

  • Slide a pick along the top of the phone towards the vibrator.
  • Pull the pick out slightly to avoid the earpiece speaker grille.

Use a opening pick to carefully pry the battery side of the frame away from the display.

  • If they do not separate easily, use the opening pick to cut any remaining adhesive.
  • If cutting is challenging, reheat and reapply an iOpener as needed.

Do not remove the display completely yet, as the display cable is still threaded through the frame.

Route the display flex cable through its hole in the frame.

  • Fully separate the right edge of the display by doing so.

Remove all old adhesive traces from the frame, taking care to avoid small glass fragments.

  • Use a lint-free cloth or coffee filter with 90% (or higher) isopropyl alcohol to clean adhesion areas in one direction only.
  • If the frame is bent or glue/glass remnants remain, replace it for proper screen mounting.

Secure the new screen with custom-cut double-sided tape applied to the back of the screen.

  • Feed the display cable through the frame while holding the screen in place.
  • Align and press the screen into its designated position.

Step 36 | Earpiece Speaker Assembly

Use the pointed end of a spudger to carefully lift the earpiece speaker assembly from its mounting point on the display frame.

Lift the assembly out with tweezers once it's been pried loose.

  • The assembly contains multiple components:
    • speaker,
    • microphone,
    • IR blaster, and
    • ambient light sensor.
  • Ensure each component is loose before lifting out the whole assembly.

Step 38 | Vibrator

Use a spudger to carefully lift the vibrator out from under the display assembly.

  • Push gently on the vibrator with the spudger point.
  • The spring-contact connector should release when the vibrator is pried up.

Disconnect and remove the vibrator.

Step 40 | Daughterboard

Remove the 3.0mm Phillips #00 screw holding the daughterboard to the display frame.

Flip the display frame over so the home button is facing you.

  • Insert the pointed edge of a spudger into the groove next to the right soft button LED cable.
  • Gently lift the LED cable off the display frame.
  • Be careful not to rip these delicate cables when peeling them off the plastic frame.

  • Insert the pointed edge of a plastic spudger into the groove above the left soft button LED cable.
  • Lift the left soft button LED cable off its plastic frame attachment.

Flip the frame over again, then carefully lift up the daughterboard to remove it from the display frame.

Handle the home button ribbon cable with care, as it is prone to tearing.

  • Orient the display frame so that the home button connector is facing towards you.
  • Use the pointed edge of a spudger to carefully separate the home button ribbon cable from the display frame.

Insert the pointed tip of a spudger into the gap and gently coax the home button cable out through the display frame.
