Samsung Galaxy S6 Battery Replacement

A charged lithium-ion battery can catch fire and/or explode if accidentally punctured.

  • Discharge the battery below 25% before disassembling your phone.

If your battery is swollen, take appropriate precautions, such as wearing eye protection and exercising caution.

  • If needed, use a dropper or syringe to inject isopropyl alcohol (90+%) around the edges of the back cover to weaken the adhesive.

Removing the rear glass destroys its original adhesive. Follow this guide to reinstall the rear glass properly.

Step 1 | SIM Card

Avoid applying excessive pressure, which may harm the SIM card tray.

  • Insert a SIM eject tool into the hole on the power button side of the phone.
  • Press to release the SIM card tray.

Step 2

Remove the SIM card tray.

Step 3 | iOpener Heating

Step 3 image

Clean the microwave thoroughly before use to prevent gunk from sticking to the iOpener.

  • Position the iOpener in the center of the microwave.
  • On carousel microwaves, ensure the plate spins freely to avoid overheating or burning the iOpener.

Step 4

Step 4 image

Do not attempt to heat the iOpener above 100°C (212°F) — risk of bursting.

  • Heat the iOpener in the microwave for thirty seconds initially.
  • If your microwave has high wattage, adjust heating time as necessary.
  • The iOpener is ready when it's barely too hot to touch.
  • As it cools during the repair, reheat in the microwave for an additional thirty seconds at a time.
  • Be cautious not to overheat, as this may cause bursting.

Do not touch the iOpener if it appears swollen — risk of damage or injury.

  • Continue using a heated iOpener even if it's still too hot to touch, waiting for it to cool slightly before reheating again.
  • A properly heated iOpener will remain warm for up to ten minutes.

Step 5

Step 5 image

Be cautious when handling the iOpener as it will be extremely hot.

Remove from microwave, gripping by one of the flat ends to avoid the center.

  • Hold with an oven mitt if necessary for added protection.

Step 6 | Alternate iOpener heating method

Step 6 image

If no microwave is available, follow this heating method:

  • Fill a pot or pan with enough boiling water to fully submerge an iOpener.
  • Turn off the heat source after bringing the water to a boil.
  • Submerge an iOpener in the hot water for 2-3 minutes, ensuring full coverage.
  • Use tongs to carefully remove the heated iOpener from the water.
  • Dry the iOpener thoroughly with a towel.
  • Be cautious when handling the hot iOpener, holding only by the end tabs.
  • Reheat as needed: bring water to a boil, turn off heat, and submerge for 2-3 minutes.

Step 7 | Rear Glass

Step 7 image

Compromising waterproof seals will expose your phone to liquid risk.

  • Prepare replacement adhesive before proceeding or take care when reassembling to avoid water exposure.

For shattered glass, apply packing tape over the entire panel for secure removal.

  1. Lay a heated iOpener on the rear panel for two minutes to loosen edge adhesive.
  2. Reheat and reapply as needed until the phone is warm (following iOpener instructions).

Shift the iOpener or use alternative heat sources with caution: a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate may be used, but avoid overheating to prevent damage to the OLED display and internal battery.

Step 8

Apply a suction cup near the bottom edge when rear glass is hot.

  • Lift on the suction cup to create a small gap underneath the rear glass.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap.

Optional: Add a few drops of isopropyl alcohol to help weaken adhesive, but be cautious when using liquids near electrical components.

Step 9

Step 9 image

Slide the pick along the bottom edge of the phone to slice through the adhesive.

  • Leave the pick in place for the next step, if necessary.
  • Re-heat the rear glass as needed to prevent the glue from cooling and hardening.

Leaving a pick inserted can help prevent re-adhering of the glue previously separated.

Step 10

  • Continue heating and cutting a small section at a time on the other three sides.
  • For each side, keep an opening pick in place to prevent the adhesive from re-sealing.

Step 11

Step 11 image

Use a opening pick to carefully slice through any remaining adhesive.

  • Remove the rear glass.

Step 12

Step 12 image

Peel away any remaining adhesive from the phone's chassis with tweezers.

  • Clean the adhesion areas with high concentration isopropyl alcohol (at least 90%) and a lint-free cloth, swiping in one direction only.
  • Remove the adhesive backing from the new rear glass.
  • Lining up one edge, firmly press the glass onto the phone's chassis.

If reinstalling old rear glass or using unadhesive pre-installed rear glass, follow this guide for correct installation.

Step 13 | Midframe Assembly

Step 13 image

Remove the thirteen 3.5mm Phillips #00 screws from the phone's midframe.

Step 14

Step 14 image

Ensure the SIM card tray has been ejected.

  • Firmly grasp the edge of the midframe assembly.
  • Lift up on the midframe while pushing down on the battery to separate it from the phone.
  • Avoid snagging the midframe on the audio jack or charging port.

Be cautious not to insert an opening pick between the glass and display, as this may cause damage.

  • Run an opening pick around the edges of the phone to separate the midframe from the rest of the device.
  • To avoid damaging the headphone jack, remove the top of the midframe first and then push it downwards.
  • If separation is difficult, apply heat with an iOpener to soften display adhesive at the edges of the display.

Step 15

Step 15 image

Disconnect and lift up the midframe assembly to separate it from the rest of the phone.

Insert the flat end of the spudger into the battery connector socket and gently pry it loose.

  • Disconnect the battery connector from the motherboard.

Step 17 | Battery

Insert a plastic opening pick between the case and the battery.

  • Keep the pick flat to avoid bending the battery, which can release dangerous chemicals.
  • Push the pick in further to separate the battery from the phone.
  • If necessary, use a warm iOpener or apply isopropyl alcohol under each corner of the battery to loosen the adhesive.

Avoid prying against the motherboard, as this can damage the phone.

Never reuse an old battery — risk of fire or explosion.

  • Remove the battery from the phone.
  • Install a new battery in its place.
  • Apply the supplied adhesive to secure the battery properly.
