Never insert a tool into the microphone hole.

  • Insert a paper clip or SIM eject tool into the SIM slot hole on top of the phone.
  • Look for the outline of the SIM tray, then press to eject it.
  • Remove the ejected SIM card tray from the phone.

Step 2 | iOpener Heating

Step 2 image

Microwave cleaning recommended before proceeding.

  • Position the iOpener in the microwave's center.
  • Ensure carousel microwaves' plates spin freely to prevent overheating.

Step 3

Step 3 image

Do not attempt to heat over 100°C (212°F) or risk overheating and bursting.

  • iOpener: Heat in microwave for 30 seconds, adjusting time based on your device's wattage.
  • The iOpener is ready when it's barely too hot to touch. If it's swollen, do not handle.
  • During the repair: reheat as needed every 10 minutes or when the iOpener cools.
  • A properly heated iOpener will stay warm for up to 10 minutes.

Step 4

Step 4 image

When removing the iOpener from the microwave, hold it by a flat end to avoid the hot center.

  • Hold the iOpener with one of its two flat ends facing up.
  • Use an oven mitt if handling the extremely hot iOpener is uncomfortable.

Step 5 | Alternate iOpener heating method

Fill a pot or pan with enough boiling water to submerge an iOpener.

  • Heat the water, then turn off the heat.
  • Submerge an iOpener in the hot water for 2-3 minutes.
  • Use tongs to extract the iOpener from the pot.
  • Dry the iOpener thoroughly with a towel.
  • Be cautious when handling the hot iOpener, holding it by the end tabs only.

For reheat instructions, repeat the process every 2-3 minutes as needed.

Step 6 | Rear Glass

Step 6 image

Opening your phone will compromise its waterproof seals.

  • Have replacement adhesive ready before proceeding, or avoid liquid exposure when reassembling without replacement.
  • If glass is shattered, apply packing tape over the entire panel to hold it together during removal.

Do not proceed without a replacement solution for waterproofing.

  • Lay heated iOpener over rear panel for 2 minutes to loosen edge adhesive.
  • Reheat and reapply as necessary, following iOpener instructions to avoid overheating.

Do not overheat phone - OLED display and internal battery are susceptible to damage.

  • Shift iOpener to heat remaining panel section for another 2 minutes.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate with caution, avoiding overheating.

Step 7

Be careful not to burn yourself on hot glass.

  • Apply a suction cup near the bottom edge of the rear glass once it's hot to the touch.
  • Lift on the suction cup to create a gap, then insert an opening pick into the gap.
  • Optionally add a few drops of isopropyl alcohol into the gap for easier adhesive removal in later steps.

Step 8

Slide a plastic pick along the bottom edge of the phone to separate the adhesive.

  • Insert a second pick, leaving it in place, if needed.
  • (Optional) Re-heat the rear glass as necessary to keep the glue fluid.

Do not let the glue cool and harden before completing this step.

Step 9

Remove the existing heating film from all but one edge.

  • Apply heat along the next edge until the adhesive separates.
  • Use a spudger to cut the remaining adhesive along that edge.
  • Repeat for the other two edges, leaving an opening pick under each to prevent resealing.

Step 10

Use a opening pick to carefully cut through any remaining adhesive.

  • Remove the rear glass.

Use tweezers to remove any remaining adhesive from the phone's chassis.

  • Clean adhesion areas with at least 90% isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth, swiping in one direction only.
  • Peel the backing off of the new rear glass, then align it carefully to the phone chassis and firmly press it into place.

If reinstalling old rear glass or using adhesive-less glass, follow this procedure instead.

The motherboard is an ESD sensitive component — handle with care.

Use an anti-static bracelet as recommended by iFixit to prevent damage.

  • Grip the motherboard on both edges toward the top of the device.
  • Lift the motherboard up and away from the display, avoiding excessive stress on the daughterboard ribbon cable.

Do not lift the motherboard all the way out at this step — disconnect the ribbon cable first.
