Insert a SIM eject tool into the hole in the SIM card slot on top of the phone.

  • Do not insert the tool into the microphone hole, as this can cause damage.
  • Press to eject the SIM card tray.
  • Remove the SIM card tray from the phone.

Step 2 | iOpener Heating

Step 2 image

Any debris on the bottom of the microwave may adhere to the iOpener.

Place the iOpener in the center of the microwave.

  • For carousel microwaves, ensure the plate spins freely to prevent overheating and burning of the iOpener.

Step 3

Step 3 image

Do not overheat the iOpener above 100°C (212°F) — risk of bursting.

Never touch a swollen iOpener.

  • Heat the iOpener for thirty seconds in the microwave, adjusting time based on your microwave's wattage.
  • The iOpener is ready when it's barely too hot to touch.
  • As the iOpener cools throughout the repair, reheat it for thirty more seconds at a time in the microwave.
  • A properly heated iOpener should stay warm for up to ten minutes.

Step 4

Step 4 image

Handle the iOpener with care as it will be extremely hot.

  • Hold the iOpener by one of the flat ends to avoid touching the hot center.
  • Use an oven mitt if you need extra protection when handling the iOpener.

Step 5 | Alternate iOpener heating method

Step 5 image

Never burn yourself on a hot iOpener.

  • Microwave alternative: Fill a pot or pan with enough boiling water to submerge an iOpener.
  • Place the iOpener in the hot water for 2-3 minutes, ensuring it's fully submerged.
  • Use tongs to carefully remove the heated iOpener from the water.
  • Dry the iOpener thoroughly with a towel before use.
  • Handle only by the end tabs, as it will be very hot.

Reheat for up to 2-3 minutes in boiling water if needed.

Step 6 | Rear Glass

Step 6 image

Opening your phone will compromise its waterproof seals; have replacement adhesive ready or exercise care against liquid exposure.

  • Apply packing tape across shattered glass panels for stability during removal.
  • Lay the iOpener over the rear panel for two minutes to loosen adhesive along the edge.
  • You may need repeated iOpener applications to achieve suitable warmth; follow instructions carefully to avoid overheating.
  • Shift the iOpener to heat remaining areas of the panel, repeating the process for another two minutes.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer or hot plate, but be cautious not to overheat and damage the OLED display or internal battery.

Step 7

Apply a suction cup near the bottom edge of the rear glass while it's still hot.

  • Lift on the suction cup to create a small gap underneath the rear glass.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap created.

Adding isopropyl alcohol to the gap may aid in adhesive weakening during subsequent steps.

Step 8

  • Slide the pick along the bottom edge of the phone, using it to cut through the adhesive securing the rear glass.
  • Consider leaving the pick in place; you'll need a second one for the next step to prevent re-adhesion of the glue.
  • Re-heating the rear glass as needed can help keep the glue from cooling and hardening prematurely.

Step 9

For the remaining three sides, repeat the heating and cutting process.

  • Under each edge, place a pick tool to keep the adhesive from sealing again.

Use a opening pick to cut through any remaining adhesive.

  • Take out the rear glass.

Failure to properly clean adhesion areas may result in reduced bond strength.

  • Remove excess adhesive from the phone's chassis with tweezers.
  • Clean adhesion areas with high concentration isopropyl alcohol (at least 90%) and a lint-free cloth, swiping in one direction only.
  • Peel the adhesive backing off of the new rear glass, and align one edge to the phone chassis before firmly pressing it into place.

Step 12 | Midframe Assembly

Step 12 image

Remove 13 Phillips #00 screws measuring 3.3 mm in length.

  • Identify and extract all screws from the midframe.
  • Set aside the removed screws for later reinstallation.

Step 13

  • Apply pressure to the back of the battery.
  • Lift upwards on the sides of the midframe simultaneously.
  • Be gentle, as excessive force may cause damage.

Handle the motherboard with care, as it is an ESD sensitive component.

Use an anti-static bracelet when handling this component, recommended by iFixit to avoid damage.

  • Grip the motherboard on both edges towards the top of the device.
  • Do not lift the motherboard out completely; disconnect the ribbon cable first from underneath.
  • Lift the motherboard up and away from the display, avoiding excessive stress on the daughterboard ribbon cable.
