Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Display Assembly and Frame Replacement

This Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge repair guide covers replacing both the screen and front plastic frame together.

  • The digitizer, OLED display, display frame, and home button will be removed from the frame as part of this process.
  • Use this guide if your replacement part includes a front plastic frame or if it does not come with one.

Removing the rear glass destroys its adhesive bond, so you'll need to reinstall it separately using a different guide.

Step 1 | Display assembly guide differentiation

  • Check the shape of the new display panel.
    • If it resembles image one, proceed with the display assembly and frame replacement guide.
    • Otherwise, follow the display assembly replacement guide.

Step 2 | SIM Tray

Insert a paper clip or SIM eject tool into the hole in the SIM card slot.

  • Avoid inserting into the microphone hole, as this could cause damage.
  • Press to eject the SIM tray.
  • Remove the SIM tray from the phone.

Step 3 | iOpener Heating

Step 3 image

Thumbnail 2

Pre-microwave cleaning is required to prevent debris from adhering to the iOpener.

  • Position the iOpener in the microwave's center.
  • For carousel microwaves, ensure the plate rotates freely:
    • If the iOpener is obstructed or stuck, it may overheat and be damaged.

Step 4

Step 4 image

Do not attempt to heat the iOpener above 100 °C (212 °F) — risk of bursting.

  • Heat the iOpener for thirty seconds in a microwave, adjusting time as needed for your device's wattage.
  • The iOpener is ready when it's just too hot to touch lightly.
  • Reheat the iOpener as needed during the repair by microwaving it for an additional thirty seconds at a time.

Never touch the iOpener if it appears swollen, as this can indicate overheating.

  • If the iOpener is still too hot to touch in the middle, continue using it while waiting for it to cool down further before reheating.
  • A properly heated iOpener should remain warm for up to ten minutes.

Step 5

Step 5 image

Careful handling is required due to the iOpener's extreme heat.

  • Hold the iOpener by one of its flat ends using an oven mitt for protection, if needed.

Step 6 | Alternate iOpener heating method

Step 6 image

Thumbnail 2

Careful handling required as the iOpener will be very hot.

  • Fill a pot or pan with enough boiling water to fully submerge an iOpener.
  • Submerge an iOpener in the hot water for 2-3 minutes.

Use tongs to handle the extremely hot iOpener carefully, gripping only the end tabs.

  • Extract the heated iOpener from the pot using tongs.
  • Dry the iOpener thoroughly with a towel before use.

To reheat, repeat the process: heat boiling water, submerge for 2-3 minutes, and dry carefully.

Step 7 | Rear Glass

Step 7 image

Opening your phone will compromise its waterproof seals.

  • Have replacement adhesive ready before proceeding, or avoid liquid exposure if reassembling without replacing the adhesive.
  • If glass is shattered, apply packing tape over the entire panel to hold it together during removal.

Use a heated iOpener:

  • Lay the iOpener over the rear panel for about two minutes to loosen adhesive around the edge of the glass.
  • Reheat and reapply as needed, following instructions to avoid overheating.

Alternatively:

  • A hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate may be used, but be careful not to overheat the phone and damage the OLED display or internal battery.

Step 8

Apply a suction cup near the bottom edge of the rear glass while it's still hot.

  • Lift on the suction cup to create a small gap underneath the glass.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap.
  • Adding isopropyl alcohol may aid in adhesive weakening, but is optional at this step.

Step 9

Step 9 image

Slide the pick along the bottom edge of the phone to slice through the adhesive.

Leaving the pick inserted may help prevent re-adhesion.

  • If necessary, re-heat the rear glass to keep the glue loose.
  • Prepare a second pick for use in the next step.

Step 10

Step 10 image

Apply the heating and cutting process to the other three sides of the device.

  • Under each edge, insert a opening pick to keep the adhesive from reforming.

Step 11

Step 11 image

Insert an opening pick and carefully slice through any remaining adhesive.

  • Once cleared, remove the rear glass.

Step 12

Step 12 image

Remove any remaining adhesive from the phone's chassis using tweezers.

  • Clean adhesion areas with isopropyl alcohol (at least 90%) and a lint-free cloth, swiping in one direction only.
  • Peel off the adhesive backing from the new rear glass and align one edge against the phone's chassis.
  • Firmly press the new rear glass onto the phone.

If reinstalling old rear glass or using non-adhesive rear glass, consult this guide for further instructions.

Step 13 | Midframe Assembly

Step 13 image
  • Remove the thirteen 3.3mm Phillips #00 screws securing the midframe.

Step 14

Handle the motherboard with care as it is an ESD sensitive component.

Use an anti-static bracelet when handling this type of component to avoid damage.

  • Grip the motherboard on both edges towards the top of the device.
  • Lift the motherboard up and away from the display, taking care not to stress the daughterboard ribbon cable.

Do not lift the motherboard out completely in this step; disconnect the ribbon cable first.

Step 21

Step 21 image

Locate and gently pull away the daughterboard ribbon cable from underneath the motherboard.

Step 22 | Battery

Step 22 image

Avoid damaging the fragile exposed display panel when removing adhesive underneath the battery.

  • Insert an opening pick under the battery and slide it across to break up adhesive.
  • Avoid using excessive force or metal tools, as this can damage the battery.

Do not deform the battery, as lithium-ion batteries can leak chemicals, catch fire, or explode if damaged.

Step 23

Step 23 image

Thumbnail 2

Do not reuse a removed battery due to safety hazards.

  • Twist the opening pick to dislodge the battery and remove it completely.
  • Replace with a new battery.

Ensure proper alignment during installation.

  • Remove any remaining adhesive from the phone using isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth.
  • Lay the replacement battery in place without applying new adhesive yet.
  • Resume re-assembly until the motherboard is in place (STEP 18).

Apply new adhesive around the perimeter of the battery compartment, avoiding the rectangular cutout.

  • Avoid applying adhesive within the central cutout as it may interfere with the display.
  • Temporarily connect the battery connector to the motherboard for proper alignment.
  • Press the battery firmly into place for 5-10 seconds, then disconnect and resume re-assembly.

Step 24 | Charging Port Daughterboard

Step 24 image

Remove the two 2.5mm Phillips #00 screws.

Step 25

Press the tip of a spudger into the gap in the display frame under the vibrator and pry it loose from the adhesive.

  • Remove the vibrator from the display assembly.
  • Compare your replacement part to the remaining display assembly, and transfer additional components like the display frame or home button if necessary.
