Samsung Galaxy S5 Rear Facing Camera Replacement

This repair guide is for replacing a faulty rear-facing camera.

Step 1 | Rear Case

Insert a fingernail or plastic opening tool into the divot to the left of the rear-facing camera.

  • Pry gently with a twisting motion to remove the flexible rear cover from the back of the phone.

Step 2 | Battery

Locate the recess at the bottom right corner of the battery.

  • plastic opening tool into the recess.
  • Lift upward to dislodge the battery.
  • Remove the battery from the phone.

Step 3 | microSD Card

Use your fingertip to gently pull the microSD card straight down out of its slot.

  • Continue to hold the microSD card as you remove it from the phone.

Step 4 | SIM Card

Follow the same steps as previously described to remove the SIM card.

Step 5 | Display Assembly

Be gentle when removing the midframe connector panel — risk of damage or disconnection.

  • Pry up the plastic midframe connector panel with a plastic opening tool.
  • Use a pair of tweezers to carefully remove the panel.
  • To reattach, use a small amount of double-stick tape, if necessary.

Locate and gently pry the home button cable connector straight up using the sharp tip of a spudger.

Follow our iOpener heating guide for proper use.

  • At least 90 seconds, apply heated iOpener to left side.
  • Reheat and place on right half of the phone.

Only pry where directed — risk of damage to surrounding components.

  • Insert the edge of an opening pick under the bottom right side of the front glass.
  • Pry carefully, stopping if you encounter resistance and reapplying heat as needed.

Sliding the opening pick along the right edge of the display.

Slide the pick carefully along the edge, stopping just short of the speaker grille.

Avoid damaging internal components by carefully sliding the pick along the top of the earpiece speaker.

  • Insert the pick at an angle near the top edge and slide it along the top of the phone, being mindful of the narrow strip of adhesive above the speaker.
  • Pick should be kept close to the surface to avoid inserting too deeply into the device.

Slide the pick around the upper left corner.

If encountering resistance from cooling adhesive, reapply a heated iOpener to the left side and try again.

Insert the opening pick into the lower left corner, working it along the left edge.

Step 14

Place the opening pick at the bottom left corner, ensuring a secure fit.

Do not remove the opening pick until the iOpener is securely positioned over the home button end of the phone.

Delicate components may be damaged if adhesive is not loosened properly.

  • Place a reheated iOpener over the bottom portion of the display assembly.
  • This will warm the adhesive, making it easier to loosen without damaging internal components.

Risk of damaging ribbon cables if the opening pick is inserted too deeply.

  • Slide the opening pick's tip across the bottom edge of the display to separate the last of the adhesive.
  • Avoid pushing the opening pick past the soft button and home button ribbon cables.

Use an opening pick to twist and detach the glass from the phone.

  • If detachment is difficult, proceed with further adhesive cutting.

Be cautious when handling thin cables — they can be easily damaged.

  • Inspect the soft button cable's adhesive to see if it needs to be separated from the front panel.
  • Insert an opening pick under the soft button icons and gently pry the button cables away from the inside of the front panel.

Adhesive on the home button flex cable can cause damage if torn.

  • Lift the display assembly at the home button end without removing it.
  • The front panel remains attached by a connector, do not fully remove it.
  • If reusing the home button flex cable, handle carefully to avoid severing from the home button.

Use the sharp tip of a spudger to lift the front panel assembly cable connector straight up off its socket on the motherboard.

  • Safely remove the front panel assembly from phone.
  • If new display lacks home button, follow instructions in Home Button Assembly guide or install a replacement button.

Step 21 | Interior Midframe Assembly

Remove the ten 3.4mm Phillips #000 screws from the display side of the midframe.

  • Remove two 4.4 mm Phillips #000 screws near the USB port.
  • Also, remove one additional 4.4 mm Phillips #000 screw from the battery side of the midframe.

Run a plastic opening tool along the left inner side of the interior frame.

  • Gently pry to separate the three white plastic clips.

Be careful not to damage the midframe or the motherboard.

  • Gently pull the long sides of the silver bezel away from the phone.
  • To aid separation, gently push inwards from inside the battery compartment, but be cautious not to flex the interior midframe half.

Locate the silver bezel and gently pull it towards you, separating the midframe into two halves.

Use a plastic opening tool to gently pry any stubborn corners loose from the silver bezel.

Be cautious when handling the interior midframe/motherboard assembly to avoid damage.

  • Remove the interior midframe/motherboard assembly from the white inner midframe.

Step 28 | Motherboard Assembly

Remove the 3.0 mm Phillips #00 screw holding the motherboard to the midframe.

Pull the motherboard away from the midframe.

Do not remove the motherboard completely as it is still attached by the Micro-USB port daughterboard connector.

  • Lay the motherboard on a flat surface.
  • Support the interior midframe with one hand, freeing your other hand to work on the motherboard assembly.

Step 30 | Rear Facing Camera

Disconnect the rear-facing camera connector by prying it straight up with the flat end of a spudger.

  • (Careful not to bend or damage the pins)
  • Use a pair of tweezers to gently lift and remove the rear-facing camera module from its socket.
