Samsung Galaxy S5 Motherboard Replacement

Follow these instructions to install a new motherboard.

Step 1 | Rear Case

Locate the divot to the left of the rear-facing camera.

  • Insert a fingernail or plastic opening tool into the divot and gently pry the flexible rear cover.
  • Twist the rear cover off the back of the phone.

Step 2 | Battery

Insert a fingernail or plastic opening tool into the recess at the bottom right corner of the battery.

  • Lift upward gently to release the battery.
  • Remove the battery away from the phone.

Step 3 | microSD Card

Grasp the microSD card firmly with your thumb and index finger.

  • Pull the microSD card straight down out of its slot.
  • Eject the microSD card from the phone.

Step 4 | SIM Card

Repeat the SIM card removal process.

  • Follow steps 1 through 5 in the previous section.

Step 5 | Display Assembly

Prise up the plastic midframe connector panel using a plastic opening tool.

  • Remove the connector panel with a pair of tweezers.
  • Reassembly: use a small amount of double-stick tape if necessary, for reattachment.

Use the spudger's sharp tip to carefully lift the home button cable connector straight out of its socket.

Follow our iOpener heating guide for proper use and heed all warnings.

  • Apply a heated iOpener to the left side of the phone for at least 90 seconds.
  • Reheat the iOpener and place it on the right half of the phone.

Use an opening pick to separate the adhesive securing the front panel glass.

  • Slide the pick under the bottom right corner of the front glass, prying only where directed.
  • If you encounter resistance, stop moving the pick and reapply heat before proceeding.

Move the opening pick along the right edge of the screen.

Stop the pick just short of the speaker grille

  • Slide it carefully around the corner.

Identify the adhesive at the top of the phone, located just above the earpiece speaker.

  • Slide a credit card or similar tool (pick) along the top of the speaker to avoid damaging internal components.
  • Carefully slide the pick across the top of the phone, taking care not to insert it too far.

Be cautious when sliding the pick, as some phones may have strong cooling adhesive.

  • Slide the pick around the upper left corner of the phone.
  • If the pick encounters resistance from the cooling adhesive, reapply a heated iOpener to the left side and try again.

Insert the opening pick into the top edge of the phone and carefully guide it downwards, stopping just shy of the lower left corner.

Place the opening pick at the bottom left corner of the phone, ensuring a secure fit.

  • Position an iOpener over the home button end to maintain stability.

Step 15

Delicate components reside at the bottom of the display assembly.

  • Place a reheated iOpener over this area.
  • The goal is to soften the adhesive for safe removal, protecting the delicate components underneath.

Risk of damaging the soft button and home button ribbon cables by inserting the opening pick too far.

  • Slide the very end of the opening pick across the bottom edge of the display to gently separate the remaining adhesive.

  • Twist the opening pick to release the glass from the phone.
  • If detachment is stubborn, use an adhesive cutter to further loosen the bond.

Separate the adhesive holding the soft button cable if needed.

  • Use caution when handling as these cables are thin and easily damaged.
  • Insert an opening pick under the soft button icons on the display.
  • Pry the button cables down off the inside of the front panel carefully.

Do not lift the front panel entirely — it is attached by a connector.

  • Home Button end of display assembly: lift slightly but do not remove.
  • When reusing the home button flex cable, be careful to avoid severing the cable from the home button, as adhesive can cause it to rip apart.
  • If the cable is damaged, the fingerprint scanner will not function, although the home button will still work.

Use the sharp tip of a spudger to lift the front panel assembly cable connector straight up off its socket on the motherboard.

  • Handle the front panel assembly with care — risk of damage if dropped.

  • If your replacement display did not come with a home button, follow our Home Button Assembly guide to transfer your old button or install a new one.

Step 21 | Interior Midframe Assembly

Remove the 10 3.4 mm Phillips #000 screws on the display side of the midframe.

Flip the phone over and locate the battery side of the midframe.

  • Remove two 4.4 mm Phillips #000 screws near the USB port on the battery side of the phone.
  • Additionally, remove one more 4.4 mm Phillips #000 screw.

Use a plastic opening tool to gently pry apart the three white plastic clips from the interior frame's left inner side.

Locate the midframe, composed of two halves that encase the motherboard.

  • Pull the long sides of the silver bezel outwards to separate the two midframe halves.
  • To aid in separation, gently push from the inside of the battery compartment; be cautious not to flex the interior half of the midframe, as it supports the mounted motherboard.

Separate the midframe into its two halves by gently prying it away from the interior section.

  • Pull the silver bezel to the right side.

Use a plastic opening tool to carefully pry any remaining corners free from the silver bezel.

Remove the interior midframe/motherboard assembly from the white inner midframe, taking care not to damage it.

Step 28 | Motherboard Assembly

Be careful when handling internal components.

  • Insert the tip of a spudger under the antenna cable connector.
  • Lift the spudger straight up to release the antenna connector from its socket on the motherboard.
  • If applicable, remove both blue and grey/white antenna cables.

Remove the 3.0 mm Phillips #000 screw securing the motherboard to the midframe.

Do not attempt to fully remove the motherboard.

  • Pull, but do not remove, the camera end of the motherboard up from the midframe.
  • This allows access to the connectors on the rear of the motherboard.

The motherboard is still attached to the interior midframe by the Micro-USB port daughterboard connector.

Use the flat end of a spudger to gently lift the daughterboard connector directly upwards from its socket on the motherboard.

Step 32 | Motherboard

Disconnect the front-facing camera connector using the flat end of a spudger.

  • Remove the front-facing camera from the motherboard.

Step 33

Disengage the rear-facing camera connector by gently prying it straight up with the flat end of a spudger.

  • Once disconnected, carefully lift the rear-facing camera away from its socket on the motherboard.
