Samsung Galaxy S5 Home Button Replacement
This guide assumes you have completed the Display Assembly guide up to the final step. If your replacement screen didn't include a home button, transfer your old one or proceed with replacing it entirely. The fingerprint reader's cable assembly is prone to damage, so handle this process carefully.
Step 1 | Home Button
Prerequisites: Follow Galaxy S5 Display Assembly guide.
- If display not yet opened, start here for home button replacement.
Careful when handling the home button assembly as the clear rubber backing is lightly adhered to the display.
Use an opening tool or heat with an iOpener/hair dryer if adhesive resists removal in following steps.
Step 2
Insert one end of a precision spudger into the gap between the home button assembly backing and the screen.
- Work your way around the bottom edge, gently cutting through the adhesive with the precision spudger.
Step 3
Use an opening tool to carefully pry up the button.
- Make sure to break most of the adhesive around the bottom of the button first.
Step 4
Grab the lifted portion of the home button assembly and gently pull it away from the display.
- Tear the rest of the adhesive to separate the assembly from the display.
- Keep the rubber backing connected to the home button by the fragile cable.
The original adhesive may not be strong enough to hold the button in place during re-installation. If this occurs:
- Lay the home button in the chassis, then install the display over it.
- The display assembly will keep the button in place.
For new installations: remove plastic film covering adhesive and carefully align the home button with the display before pressing it into place.
