Samsung Galaxy S5 Display Assembly Replacement

The display assembly replacement involves swapping out the front glass, digitizer, and home button cable.

Step 1 | Rear Case

Insert a fingernail or plastic opening tool into the divot to the left of the rear-facing camera.

  • Pry gently while twisting the flexible rear cover off the back of the phone.

Step 2 | Battery

Insert a plastic opening tool into the recess in the bottom right corner of the battery.

  • Lift upward to release the battery.
  • Remove the battery away from the phone.

Step 3 | microSD Card

Use your fingertip to gently pull the microSD card straight down out of its slot.

Take care not to force it, as this may damage the card or the phone's internal components.

  • Once removed, carefully handle the microSD card to prevent any accidental insertion back into the phone.

Step 4 | SIM Card

Repeat the process for removing the SIM card.

  • Follow steps 1-4 in the previous section.

  • Use a plastic opening tool to pry up the midframe connector panel.
  • Remove the panel with a pair of tweezers.
  • If necessary, apply a small amount of double-stick tape for proper reassembly.

Hold the spudger at an angle and use its sharp tip to gently lift the home button cable connector out of its socket.

Follow our iOpener heating guide for proper use.

  • Apply a heated iOpener to the left side of the phone for at least 90 seconds.
  • Reheat the iOpener and position it on the right half of the phone.

Prying can damage the glass — be careful.

  • Slide an opening pick under the bottom right corner of the front panel glass.
  • Only pry where directed, avoiding unwanted contact.

Slide the opening pick up along the right side of the display.

Slide the pick gently around the corner, stopping short of the speaker grille.

Apply the opening pick along the top edge of the phone, starting from the earpiece speaker.

  • Position the pick carefully, avoiding internal components below the speaker.
  • Avoid inserting the pick too deeply to prevent damage.

Be cautious when handling the device to avoid damage.

  • Slide the pick around the top-left corner with gentle pressure.
  • If you encounter resistance from cooling adhesive, reheat the iOpener and apply it to the left side of the phone.

Slide the opening pick down the left side, reaching the lower left corner.

Place the opening pick at the bottom left corner of the phone, ensuring a secure fit.

  • Position the iOpener over the home button end of the phone in the next step.
  • Avoid allowing the opening pick to slip out during this process.

Delicate components are present at the bottom of the display assembly.

Reheat an iOpener until it's hot.

  • Position the reheated iOpener over the bottom portion of the display assembly.
  • The adhesive should be warm and easily removable to prevent damage to the phone.

Be careful not to cut the soft button and home button ribbon cables

  • Use only the tip of the opening pick and slide it across the bottom edge of the display.
  • This will help separate the remaining adhesive without damaging the cables.

Twist the opening pick to break the glass seal and detach the screen.

  • If the front panel resists removal, proceed with adhesive cutting as necessary.

Separating adhesive can cause damage to thin, delicate cables.

  • Insert an opening pick under the soft button icons and pry the button cables away from the front panel.
  • Pry the cable down off the inside of the front panel, taking care not to lacerate it.

Hold the display assembly in place with one hand.

  • Lift the home button end of the display assembly slightly, but do not remove it.
  • The front panel is still attached by a connector and should not be removed entirely.
  • If reusing the home button flex cable, handle with care to avoid severing the cable from the home button.
  • Adhesive can cause the cable to rip apart from the home button, resulting in a non-functional fingerprint scanner.

Use the spudger tip to lift the front panel assembly cable connector straight up off its socket on the motherboard.

  • Remove the front panel assembly from phone safely.
  • If your replacement display lacks a home button, transfer your old button using our Home Button Assembly guide or install a new one.
