Samsung Galaxy S4 Headphone Jack Assembly Replacement

This repair guide covers replacement of the headphone jack assembly, incorporating the status light and infrared sensor, for a Samsung Galaxy S4.

Step 1 | Rear Case

Use a plastic opening tool or your fingertip to pry carefully.

  • Insert tool into divot to the left of the rear-facing camera, near the power button.
  • Pry gently until the casing separates.

Hold the rear case at its lower corner with your fingers.

  • Gently lift the rear case away from the phone.

Step 3 | Battery

Insert a plastic opening tool or your finger into the notch of the battery compartment.

  • Lift the battery upward.
  • Remove the battery from your phone.

Step 4 | SIM Card

Press the SIM card slightly deeper into its slot using a plastic opening tool or your fingernail until you hear a click.

  • Release the SIM card and let it pop out of its slot.
  • Remove the SIM card from the device.

Make sure to push the SIM card into its slot during reassembly until you hear a distinct click for secure installation.

Step 5 | Midframe

Remove the nine 4.0 mm Phillips #00 screws from the midframe.

When handling thin points on the midframe bezel, be careful not to bend or crack them.

  • Insert your plastic opening tool between the chrome bezel and display glass, near the volume button side of the phone.
  • Sweep the opening tool along the seam, separating the clips as you go.

Only pry enough to release each clip, as excessive force may cause damage.

Continue prying the phone's corner with a gentle rocking motion.

  • Slide an opening tool along the seam between the midframe and display at the bottom of the device.
  • Work the tool to release more of the plastic clips, allowing for further separation of the components.

  • Pry along the edge near the power button using a thin tool.
  • Slide the tool carefully along the seam of the device.

Step 9

Run the plastic opening tool around the top of the phone to release the last of the clips.

  • Verify that all plastic clips are released by checking the perimeter of the device a second time.

Remove midframe from display assembly.

Step 11 | Motherboard Assembly

  • Use the flat end of a spudger to disconnect the USB board connector.
  • Disconnect the front-facing camera cable connector.
  • Disconnect the earpiece speaker assembly cable connector.

Remove all three cable connectors.

  • Headphone jack assembly: Disconnect its cable connector.
  • Display/Digitizer: Disconnect its cable connector.
  • Antenna: Disconnect its cable connector.

Step 13

Remove the 2.4 mm Phillips #00 screw from the motherboard assembly.

Step 14

Remove the motherboard with care.

  • Hold the motherboard by its edges to prevent ESD damage.
  • Avoid snagging it on cables as you extract it from the display assembly.

Step 15 | Headphone Jack

Remove the 2.4 mm Phillips #00 screw securing the headphone jack assembly to the display assembly.

Step 16

Remove the headphone jack assembly.
