Samsung Galaxy S4 Display Assembly Replacement

This repair guide is for replacing the display assembly in a Samsung Galaxy S4.

Step 1 | Rear Case

Locate the small divot to the left of the rear-facing camera, near the power button.

  • Pry gently using a plastic opening tool, or your finger nail, in the identified divot.

Hold the rear case by its corner near the divot and lift it off the phone.

Step 3 | MicroSD Card

Use the flat end of a spudger or your fingernail to press the microSD card slightly deeper.

  • Press until you hear a click, then release the card and it will pop out.
  • Remove the microSD card from its slot.

Make sure not to force the card out of its slot, as this can cause damage.

  • For reassembly, push the microSD card into its slot until it clicks in place.

Step 4 | Battery

  • Insert a plastic opening tool or your finger into the battery compartment notch.
  • Lift the battery upward to release it.
  • Make sure not to touch any internal components.

  • Remove the battery from your phone.

Step 5 | SIM Card

Press the SIM card into its slot with a plastic opening tool or your fingernail until you hear a click.

The card will pop out after the click; do not try to remove it yet.

Remove the SIM card.

  • During reassembly, press the SIM card into its slot until it clicks in place.

Step 6 | Midframe

Remove the nine 4.0 mm Phillips #00 screws holding the midframe to the display assembly.

Risk of damage to the midframe or display assembly if not careful.

  • Insert a plastic opening tool between the chrome bezel and larger chrome border piece near the volume button.
  • Slide the tool along the seam, separating plastic clips without applying excessive force.
  • Pry only enough to release each clip; be cautious of thin points that may crack easily.

Continue prying around the corner of the phone.

  • Slide the opening tool along the seam between the midframe and display at the bottom of the device.
  • This will release more of the plastic clips.

Position the opening tool at the power button edge.

  • Pry gently along the seam with the opening tool.

Slide the plastic opening tool around the top of the phone to release the remaining clips.

  • Check the entire perimeter for any remaining clips by running the tool along the edges again.

Disconnect and remove all screws holding the midframe in place.

  • Release the midframe's retaining clips at the bottom of the device.
  • Lift the midframe away from the display assembly.

Step 12 | Motherboard Assembly

  • Disconnect the USB board connector using the flat end of a spudger.
  • Remove the front-facing camera cable connector.
  • Remove the earpiece speaker assembly cable connector.

  • Disconnect the headphone jack assembly cable at its connector.
  • Remove the connection between the display/digitizer cable and its connector.
  • Separate the antenna cable from its connector.

Step 14

Remove the 2.4mm Phillips #00 screw from the motherboard assembly.

Remove the motherboard carefully.

  • Hold the motherboard by its edges to prevent ESD damage.
  • Avoid snagging cables while extracting it from the display assembly.

Step 16 | Headphone Jack

Remove the 2.4 mm Phillips #00 screw holding the headphone jack assembly in place.

Step 17

Remove the headphone jack assembly.

Step 18 | Display Assembly

Remove any PH #00 screws (2.4mm) holding the upper display assembly bracket in place.

  • Take out the screw if it's present.
  • Carefully lift off the upper display assembly bracket.

Step 19

Release the front-facing camera from its connectors.

Be gentle to avoid damaging the camera or surrounding components.

Step 20

Disconnect the earpiece speaker wires from the display board.

Be careful not to damage the earpiece speaker assembly.

  • Remove the earpiece speaker assembly from the display assembly by gently pulling it away from its connectors and housing.

Insert the tip of a spudger under the vibrator to release it from the display assembly.

  • Do not immediately remove the vibrator, as its cable is adhered to the rear of the display assembly.
  • Pry the vibrator cable up using a spudger, taking care not to damage it.

Apply heat from a heat gun carefully, as excessive heat can damage components. A liberal application will soften the adhesive and allow for its re-use.

Locate and remove the vibrator from the rear of the display assembly.

Insert the spudger tip between the USB port and the USB port bracket.

  • Gently pry one side of the bracket off its post.

Step 24

Release the USB port bracket by grasping it firmly.

  • Push down gently while prying to dislodge from the screw posts.
  • Once removed, set aside for later reinstallation.

Careful handling is required when disconnecting cables.

  • Separate the soft button cable from the USB board cable.
  • Pull the soft button cable away from the USB board with care.
  • Remove the antenna connector cable from the USB board.

Be careful not to bend the USB board when removing it.

  • Gently insert the flat end of a spudger under the USB board.
  • Work slowly to free the USB board from its adhesive holding.

Step 27

Remove the USB board from the display assembly.

Peel up and remove the antenna connector cable from its channel in the rear of the display assembly.

  • If applicable, remove the additional antenna cable from the opposite side of the phone.

For reassembly, reconnect the antenna connector cable before routing it back into its channel.

  • Reinstall the USB board first to make future steps easier.
