Samsung Galaxy S4 Bare Screen Replacement

High risk of damage to the original LCD during this repair; consider purchasing a pre-assembled screen for an easier process.

  • Replace only the bare LCD display (without frame) on your Samsung Galaxy S4 with this guide.

Step 1 | Rear Case

Locate the small divot to the left of the rear-facing camera, near the power button.

  • Pry carefully with a plastic opening tool or your fingernail.

Step 2

Grasp the rear case at the bottom edge, near the divot.

  • Lift upwards to release the clips securing the case.
  • Carefully slide the rear case off the phone body.

Step 3 | MicroSD Card

Press the microSD card into its slot with a flat tool or fingernail until you hear a click.

  • Release and then remove the microSD card.

Do not force the card, as this may damage the connector.

Reassembly: push the microSD card into its slot until it clicks in place.

Step 4 | Battery

Insert plastic opening tool or finger into battery compartment notch.

  • Lift battery upward.
  • Remove battery from phone.

Step 5 | SIM Card

  • Use a plastic opening tool or your fingernail to press the SIM card deeper into its slot.
  • You'll know it's seated properly when you hear a click.
  • Release the card and it will pop out of its slot, so be careful not to lose it.

  • Remove the SIM card from the phone.
  • During reassembly, press the SIM card into its slot until you hear another click.

Step 6 | Midframe

Remove the nine 4.0 mm Phillips #00 screws holding the midframe to the display assembly.

Locate the chrome bezel on the volume button side of the phone.

  • Insert a plastic opening tool between the chrome bezel and the display glass, just above the larger chrome border piece.
  • Slide the tool along the seam to separate the plastic clips.

Be gentle and only pry enough to avoid cracking the thin points in the midframe bezel.

Continue prying around the corner of the phone.

  • Slide the opening tool along the seam between the midframe and display along the bottom of the device.
  • Release more of the plastic clips.

Pry around the corner towards the power button.

  • Slide a opening tool along the seam.

Step 10

Run the plastic opening tool around the top edge of the phone one more time to ensure all clips are released.

  • Continue sliding the tool along the midframe until it's fully separated from the display assembly.
  • Verify that all plastic clips have been released by running the tool along the entire perimeter of the device.

Step 11

Disconnect the midframe screws and gently pull it away from the display assembly.

Step 12 | Motherboard Assembly

  • Use the flat end of a spudger to disconnect the USB board connector.
  • Remove the front-facing camera cable connector.
  • Disconnect the earpiece speaker assembly cable connector.

  • Remove the headphone jack assembly cable connector.
  • Release the display/digitizer cable connector.
  • Disconnect the antenna cable connector.

Step 14

Remove 2.4 mm Phillips #00 screw from motherboard assembly.

Prevent static shock by handling the motherboard only by its edges.

  • Remove the motherboard from the display assembly, taking care not to snag it on cables.

Step 16 | Remove the speaker assembly

Unclip the speaker assembly using a opening tool at the phone's bottom.

  • Remove the speaker assembly.

Step 17 | Remove the antenna cable

Use tweezers to carefully lift and de-route the antenna cable away from the case edge.

Disconnect the antenna connection by lifting it straight up.

  • Remove the antenna cable completely from the speaker daughter board.

Step 19 | Remove the screen glass

Prepare an iOpener or use a hair dryer or heat gun to heat the screen side of the phone.

  • Leave the iOpener on the phone for at least two minutes to soften the display adhesive.
  • Reheat and repeat as needed until the adhesive becomes loose enough.

When using a Jimmy, be aware that applying excessive pressure can lead to accidents.

  • Always wear protective eyewear.
  • Be cautious not to apply too much pressure with the Jimmy.
  • The glass may shatter, releasing sharp fragments. Keep a safe distance to avoid injury.

Step 21

Proper eye protection is essential.

  • Insert the blade into the gap between the frame and screen near the volume rocker.
  • Slowly slide the blade down the phone, towards the charge port, to release the screen glass from the LCD.

The glass may develop hairline fractures during this step.

Handle fragile components with extreme care to avoid damage.

  • Remove the screen glass completely, taking care not to touch the fragile areas.
  • Protect your hands with gloves and cover the exposed LCD display with tape before proceeding.

Step 23 | Remove the LCD

Peel the cracked LCD carefully away from the frame.

  • If stuck, apply a Jimmy between the LCD and the frame to loosen it.
  • Remove the LCD.

Use a iOpener to heat the area around the LCD.

  • Pry up the foil liner from underneath the LCD using a plastic tool or credit card.
  • If necessary, reheat and reapply the iOpener to loosen the adhesive further.

Step 25 | Clean off old adhesive

Remove all old adhesive using tweezers from the phone case.

  • Feed the display cable through the hole on the rear of the case.
