Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini Screen and Digitizer Replacement

Damage to the device's display can cause further issues if not addressed promptly.

  • Replace the cracked or damaged AMOLED screen and digitizer assembly.
  • This repair is specific to the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini model only.

Step 1 | Battery

Hold down the END key until the phone powers off.

Use a plastic opening tool to remove the back cover of the cell phone.

Use a plastic opening tool to pry the battery out.

Step 4 | SIM Card

Use tweezers to carefully slide the SIM card towards the bottom of the device.

Use a nylon spudger to push through the hole at the top of the memory card holder and slide it out.

Step 6 | Charging Assembly

Remove the 10 4.0 mm Phillips screws on the back of the phone using a #00 Phillips screwdriver.

Tweezers can be helpful in removing the screws from their holes, as their size makes removal difficult.

  • Begin by inserting a plastic tool into the USB port.
  • Work the tool around the perimeter of the phone, positioned between the rear housing and frame.
  • You will know you've reached a clip when it releases with a slight detent or "click".

  • Separate the rear housing from the mid-frame.

  • Disconnect the two flex cables attached to the USB board.
  • Tweezers may be necessary for this task.

Use a plastic opening tool to gently pry under the charging port, releasing it from the double-sided tape beneath.

Release the USB board from its clips.

  • Lift out the main board.
  • Remove the USB board and set aside.

Use a nylon spudger with the flat end to gently lift the headphone jack press-fit connector, releasing the ribbon cable.

Use a nylon spudger with a flat end to gently lift the infrared sensor press-fit connector and release the ribbon cable.

Use the flat end of a nylon spudger to gently pry up the front-facing camera press-fit connector.

  • This will help release the attached ribbon cable.

Gently lift the motherboard upwards, keeping it partially detached from the device.

  • The digitizer ribbon cable remains connected to the underside of the motherboard.

Insert the flat end of a nylon spudger into the gap between the digitizer and the press-fit connector.

  • Lift up on the spudger to dislodge the connector and allow the motherboard to slide free.

Use a heat gun or an iOpener to loosen the adhesive.

  • Aim the device at the screen's perimeter, being careful not to damage any nearby components.
  • Hold for about 30 seconds on each section until the adhesive becomes soft and pliable.

Use a suction cup to gently pry the screen away from its frame.

  • If necessary, apply additional heat to soften the screen adhesive.
  • If the screen is severely cracked or damaged, cover it with packaging tape before proceeding.
  • Alternatively, use a jimmy or plastic opening pick to wedge the screen free.

Do not apply excessive force — risk of damage to surrounding components.

Insert plastic opening pick into gap between screen and housing.

  • Slide pick along screen's edge to release screen from adhesive.

Remove the digitizer assembly by detaching it from the rest of the device.

  • Disconnect the ribbon connector securing the digitizer ribbon cable to the motherboard.
  • Pull the digitizer ribbon cable out through the frame, taking care not to damage it in the process.
