Cracked back glass can cause injury or complicate disassembly.

  • Apply non-overlapping strips of packing tape to the cracked glass, covering it completely.
  • Maintain a single strip at the bottom edge, large enough for a suction cup to attach.

Do not apply tape to the frame and consider wearing safety glasses during the repair.

Step 4 | Heat the back cover

Step 4 image

Improper heat gun use can damage display & battery.

  • Heat an iOpener on the bottom edge of the back cover for 2 minutes.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer or heat gun to loosen the adhesive.

Follow linked heat gun instructions carefully to avoid damage.

Step 5 | Adhesive information

Position the suction handle on the center of the back cover's bottom edge, as near to the edge as feasible.

Apply strong, steady force to the suction handle until a gap appears between the back glass and frame.

  • Hold the phone down with one hand or stabilize the frame with your other hand.
  • Be careful: the phone may be hot.

  • Insert an opening pick into the gap.

Use a suction handle to lift off the back cover.

  • If the cover still feels stuck, use an opening pick around the perimeter and separate any remaining adhesive.
  • During reassembly:
    • Power on your phone and test all functions before sealing it up.
    • Make sure to power down your phone completely before continuing work.

    • Check the rear cameras for smudges and gently wipe them with a clean, lint-free cloth if necessary.

Apply replacement back cover adhesive either to the frame or the back cover, following one of these guides depending on where it's applied.

Make sure each screw returns to its original position.

Step 15 | Heat the wireless charging adhesive

Step 15 image

Thumbnail 2

Apply heat from an iOpener to the two tabs holding the wireless charging coil for 1 minute.

  • Apply more heat if tabs feel fragile, then try again.

Slide a spudger under the top edge of the upper tab and lift slowly to separate it.

This may need to be repeated several times for complete separation.

Remove the SIM card tray before proceeding.

  • Insert a spudger under the top right corner of the USB-C board and lift until it unclips.

Make sure cables are clear of snagging points during removal.

  • During reassembly, keep cables out of the way and hold them up as needed.
  • Insert the USB-C board at a slight angle, guiding the port into its recess.
