Samsung Galaxy S23 Screen Replacement

This process will destroy your old screen and may compromise water resistance.

  • Follow this guide to replace a standalone screen or one pre-installed on a frame.
  • Note: Retaining water resistance depends on proper adhesive reapplication, which may affect the device's IP rating.

Step 1 | Prepare your phone for disassembly

Step 1 image

Thumbnail 2

Allow your phone's battery to drain below 25% as a charged lithium-ion battery is a potential safety hazard.

Disconnect all cables from your phone.

  • Press and hold the side key and the volume down button.
  • Select "Power off" to shut down your device.

Step 2 | Heat the right edge

Step 2 image

Heat application may cause permanent damage to the display or internal battery.

  • Apply an iOpener for 2 minutes to soften adhesive on the right back cover edge.
  • Alternative methods: use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but avoid overheating.

Step 3 | Insert an opening pick

Step 3 image

Thumbnail 3

Apply a suction handle near the center of the right edge.

Be careful not to overheat — follow iOpener instructions carefully.

  • Pull up on the suction handle with strong, steady force to create a gap.
  • If necessary, reapply heat to soften adhesive further and try again.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap.

Step 4 | Separate the right adhesive

Step 4 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Slide a magnification pick back and forth along the right edge to separate the adhesive.

Leave the pick inserted near the bottom right corner to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Step 5 | Heat the bottom edge

Step 5 image

Apply a iOpener to the bottom edge of the back cover and heat it for 2 minutes.

Step 6 | Separate the corner adhesive

Step 6 image

  • Insert a second opening pick at the bottom right corner.
  • Rotate it around the bottom right corner to separate the adhesive.

Step 7 | Separate the bottom adhesive

Step 7 image

Thumbnail 2
  • Opening pick, slide to the bottom left corner and gently pry the adhesive.
  • Leave the opening pick in place at the bottom left corner to prevent re-adhesion.

Step 8 | Heat the left edge

Step 8 image

Apply a iOpener preheated according to manufacturer's instructions to the left edge of the back cover for 2 minutes.

Step 9 | Separate the corner adhesive

Step 9 image

Thumbnail 2

Rotate the opening pick around the bottom left corner to loosen the adhesive.

Step 10 | Separate the left adhesive

Step 10 image

  • Insert a third opening pick at the bottom left corner.
  • Slide this pick toward the top left corner to separate the adhesive.
  • Leave the pick in place, ensuring the adhesive doesn't reseal.

Step 11 | Heat the top edge

Step 11 image

Heat an iOpener until warm.

Apply the heated iOpener to the top edge of the back cover for exactly two minutes, avoiding direct skin contact with the heat source.

Step 12 | Separate the corner adhesive

Step 12 image

  • Insert a pick into the top left corner.
  • Rotate the pick around the top left corner to loosen the adhesive.

Step 13 | Separate the top adhesive

Step 13 image

Thumbnail 2

Insert the opening pick into the top right corner, separating the adhesive.

  • Slide the pick to the top right corner and gently pry apart the sections.
  • Leave the pick in place to prevent re-adhesion.

Step 14 | Separate the flash adhesive

Step 14 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

There's a remaining patch of adhesive directly under the flash.

  • Line up the tip of an opening pick with the flash cutout, then slide it under the top edge of the back cover until you feel it snag on the adhesive.
  • You should see the opening pick through the flash cutout. Continue sliding it toward the bottom of the phone until the adhesive separates from the back cover.

Avoid touching the rear cameras with your pick, as pushing against the lenses risks damaging them.

Step 15 | Remove the back cover

Step 15 image

Thumbnail 3

Remove the back cover.

  • If the cover is stuck to the frame, use an opening pick to slide around the perimeter until it separates completely.

Power on your phone and test all functions during reassembly.

Make sure your phone is powered down before continuing work.

  • Remove any remaining adhesive chunks with tweezers or your fingers.
  • Use heat and isopropyl alcohol (90% or greater) to aid in removing stubborn adhesives.

If using custom-cut adhesives, follow the specific guide for that material.

For double-sided tape, refer to its respective guide for removal instructions.

Step 16 | Disconnect the wireless charging coil

Step 16 image

Thumbnail 2

Use a spudger to pry up and disconnect the wireless charging coil press connector from the motherboard.

  • To reconnect: align the connector carefully and press down on one side until it clicks, then repeat on the other side.
  • Be cautious not to press in the middle; if misaligned, pins can bend, causing permanent damage.

Step 17 | Remove the wireless charging coil and loudspeaker screws

Step 17 image

Remove the wireless charging coil's six 3.5mm-long screws using a Phillips screwdriver.

  • Next, remove the loudspeaker's seven 3.5mm-long screws also using a Phillips screwdriver.

Use the flat end of your spudger to carefully pry up and release the display cable press connector.

Be careful not to damage the connector or surrounding components.

Step 22 | Put the back cover on

Step 22 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Place the back cover on the frame, ensuring protection for the battery and internal components.

Do not apply new adhesive at this step, as you will need to remove the back cover again.

The old adhesive is sufficient to hold the back cover in place temporarily.

  • Flip your phone over with the screen facing upwards.

Step 23 | Tool and safety information

Step 23 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Use a thin, rigid tool like iFlex to create an initial gap between the front glass and frame.

  • Grip iFlex or similar metal tools by the handle, not the edges, due to sharp edges.
  • Take precautions: wear gloves and safety glasses in case the front glass shatters during removal.

Step 24 | Heat the screen

Step 24 image

Do not overheat the device.

  • Apply a hair dryer or heat gun to the top edge of the screen, aiming for almost uncomfortably hot temperatures.
  • Avoid exceeding this temperature, as the battery may suffer from heat damage.

Step 25 | Insert an iFlex

Step 25 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Apply a suction handle to the top edge of the screen, near the edge.

  • Insert the iFlex into the earpiece speaker gap at a downward angle, between the top edge of the glass and frame.

Lift the suction handle with strong force; the front glass may partially separate. This is normal.

Only insert the iFlex enough to create an initial gap; excessive insertion may damage the front-facing camera.

Step 26 | Insert an opening pick

Step 26 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Insert an opening pick between the iFlex and a top corner of the front glass.

  • Rotate the iFlex to pry up the adhesive.

Step 27 | Remove the front glass

Step 27 image

Grasp a corner of the screen panel and gently pry it away from the frame.

  • Continue peeling the panel off slowly, working around its edges.
  • The remaining adhesive will eventually break free from the frame.
  • Once separated, remove the screen panel.

Careful not to apply too much pressure, which can damage the surrounding components.
