Samsung Galaxy S23 Motherboard Replacement

Replacing the motherboard may compromise the phone's water resistance, affecting its IP rating.

  • Follow this guide to replace the motherboard in your Samsung Galaxy S23.

Step 1 | Prepare your phone for disassembly

A fully charged lithium-ion battery may pose a safety risk.

  • Allow your phone's battery to drain below 25% if possible.

If the battery is swollen, take necessary precautions before proceeding.

  • Disconnect all cables from your phone.
  • Side key and volume down button: Press and hold both simultaneously.
  • Select "Power off" to turn off your device.

Step 2 | Heat the right edge

Apply iOpener to right edge of back cover for 2 minutes to soften adhesive.

  • Alternative: use a hair dryer, heat gun or hot plate, but be cautious not to overheat phone.

Risks overheating display and internal battery with improper use.

Step 3 | Insert an opening pick

Apply a suction handle near the right edge of the back cover.

  • Pull up on the suction handle with strong force to create a gap between the cover and frame.
  • If needed, apply more heat as per iOpener instructions to soften adhesive.
  • Insert an opening pick into the created gap.

Step 4 | Separate the right adhesive

Insert a pick near the bottom right corner, then slide it back and forth along the right edge to separate the adhesive.

Leave the pick in place to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Step 5 | Heat the bottom edge

Heat the iOpener and apply it to the bottom edge of the back cover for two minutes.

Step 6 | Separate the corner adhesive

Insert another opening pick at the bottom right corner.

  • Rotate the pick clockwise, working your way around the corner to loosen the adhesive.

Step 7 | Separate the bottom adhesive

Slide the opening pick to the bottom left corner, separating the adhesive.

Make sure the pick remains at the bottom left corner to prevent the adhesive from resealing again.

Step 8 | Heat the left edge

Apply a heated iOpener to the left edge of the back cover for exactly 2 minutes.

Step 9 | Separate the corner adhesive

Insert the opening pick at the bottom left corner and rotate it gently to loosen the adhesive.

Insert a third opening pick at the bottom left corner.

  • Slide the pick towards the top left corner, separating the adhesive.
  • Leave the pick in the top left corner to prevent resealing of the adhesive.

Step 11 | Heat the top edge

Apply heat to the top edge of the iPad's back cover using a heated iOpener for 2 minutes.

Step 12 | Separate the corner adhesive

Locate the top left corner and insert a pick.

  • Rotate the pick around the top left corner to loosen the adhesive.

Step 13 | Separate the top adhesive

Insert the opening pick into the top right corner and gently pry the adhesive apart.

  • Hold the pick in place at the top right corner.
  • This will prevent the adhesive from resealing as you work.

Step 14 | Separate the flash adhesive

Be careful not to damage the rear cameras.

  • Line up an opening pick with the flash cutout.
  • Slide the pick under the top of the back cover until it catches on the remaining adhesive.
  • Continue sliding the pick down toward the bottom until the adhesive separates completely from the back cover.

Avoid pushing against the rear camera lenses with your opening pick.

Step 15 | Remove the back cover

Remove the back cover.

If it's still stuck to the frame, use an opening pick to carefully pry it apart.

  • Before reassembling, power on your phone and test all functions to ensure proper operation.
  • Power down your phone completely before continuing work.

Remove any adhesive residue using tweezers or fingers. If needed, apply heat and isopropyl alcohol (90% or greater).

  • If using custom-cut adhesives, refer to a separate guide for instructions.
  • For double-sided tape, consult the specified guide for reapplication procedures.

Step 16 | Disconnect the wireless charging coil

Risk of damaging the motherboard if the connector is misaligned.

  • Use a spudger to pry up and disconnect the wireless charging coil press connector from the motherboard.
  • To reattach, carefully align and press down on one side until it clicks, then repeat on the other side.
  • Avoid pressing in the middle, as this can cause permanent damage to the pins.

Step 17 | Remove the wireless charging coil and loudspeaker screws

Remove the Phillips screwdriver and unscrew the 13 3.5 mm-long screws, six of which secure the wireless charging coil and seven that secure the loudspeaker.

  • Six screws: securing the wireless charging coil.
  • Seven screws: securing the loudspeaker.

Step 18 | Remove the wireless charging coil and loudspeaker

Locate the notch at the top left corner of the loudspeaker.

  • Pry into the notch with your spudger to release the loudspeaker.
  • The loudspeaker should now unclip from its mounting frame.

Use your fingers to lift the loudspeaker away from the .

  • Remove the wireless charging coil and loudspeaker from the frame.
  • During reassembly, press around the perimeter of the loudspeaker to clip it to the frame.

Step 20 | Disconnect the battery

Position the spudger on the press connector.

  • Pry up the press connector with a gentle rocking motion.
  • Disconnect the battery once the press connector is released.

Step 21 | Disconnect the earpiece speaker

Use the tip of a spudger to carefully pry up and disconnect the earpiece speaker press connector.

Remove the earpiece speaker with a Phillips screwdriver.

  • There are five 3.5mm-long screws to remove.

Insert the flat end of your spudger between the bottom edge of the earpiece speaker and the silver shield on the motherboard.

Do not insert your spudger anywhere else, as you risk dislodging fragile surface-mounted components.

  • Twist the spudger to unclip the earpiece speaker from the frame.
  • Remove the earpiece speaker.

During reassembly, insert the top end of the earpiece speaker into the frame first before pressing down and clipping it back in.

Step 24 | Disconnect the interconnect cables

  • Use a spudger to pry up the press connectors.
  • Disconnect the primary and secondary interconnect cables from the daughterboard.

Repeat the process for the primary interconnect and secondary interconnect cable connectors on the motherboard.

Step 26 | Remove the interconnect cables

Remove the interconnect cables from their connectors.

When handling fragile components, be extremely careful not to damage nearby surface mount parts.

  • Insert the spudger tip between the left edge of the antenna press connector and the motherboard's silver shield.
  • Pry up carefully on only this specific edge to avoid dislodging surrounding components, and disconnect the antenna press connector.

Step 28 | Disconnect the display and antenna cables

Use a spudger to carefully pry up the display and 5G mmWave cable press connectors from the motherboard.

Step 29 | Disconnect the front camera

Disconnect the front camera press connector with your spudger.

Step 30 | Remove the motherboard screws

  • Remove the two motherboard screws using a Phillips screwdriver.
  • The screws are 3.5 mm long.

Step 31 | Remove the motherboard

Insert the flat end of your spudger between top edge of motherboard and frame near earpiece speaker cutout.

  • Twist spudger to lift motherboard up until you can grip it with fingers.
  • Remove the motherboard.
  • During reassembly, ensure all cables are out of way before placing motherboard back into frame.

Step 32 | Remove the ultrawide camera

Remove the ultrawide camera, then the telephoto camera, and finally the wide-angle camera, working from top to bottom.

  • Flip over the motherboard to access the rear camera press connectors.
  • Pry up gently with a spudger point to disconnect the ultrawide camera press connector.

Locate the ultrawide camera which is connected to the motherboard via metal pegs.

  • Hold the motherboard firmly in place while lifting the ultrawide camera out of its peg holes.
  • Once removed, you can take out the ultrawide camera.

Step 34 | Remove the main camera

Locate the main camera press connector.

  • Pry up the connector using the pointed end of a spudger.
  • Lift the main camera off the motherboard.
  • Remove the main camera from the device.

Step 35 | Remove the telephoto camera

  • Use a spudger to pry up the telephoto camera press connector.
  • Lift off the telephoto camera from the motherboard and remove it.

During reassembly, reinstall rear cameras in reverse order (Telephoto → Main → Ultrawide) to ensure proper alignment.

Step 36 | Only the motherboard remains

Dispose of all remaining components.

  • Verify that only the motherboard is left intact.
