Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra Battery Replacement

This guide specifically covers replacing the battery. For a complete replacement of the OEM screen and battery assembly, follow a different guide.

Step 1 | Heat the right edge

Step 1 image

Risk of fire: Let your phone's battery drain to below 25% before starting this repair.

  • Apply a heated iOpener to the right edge of the back cover for two minutes.
  • Alternative heat sources (hair dryer, heat gun, hot plate) can be used – however, exercise caution to avoid overheating the phone and causing damage to the display or internal battery.

Step 2 | Adhesive information

Step 2 image

Be aware that the back cover is secured by adhesive around the frame.

  • The adhesive strength is greatest at the bottom right and top left corner points.
  • Note the location of the adhesive as you prepare to separate the back cover.

Step 3 | Insert an opening pick

Step 3 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3
  • Suction handle should be applied as close as possible to the right edge's center.
  • Pull up on the suction handle with strong, steady force to create a gap between the cover and frame.
  • If a gap is hard to achieve, additional heat may be needed. Be cautious not to overheat following iOpener guidelines.

  • Once a gap exists, insert an opening pick.

Step 4 | Slice the right adhesive

Step 4 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Insert the pick into the right edge, moving it gently back and forth to cut through the adhesive.

Do not remove the pick until the repair is complete; leave it inserted near the bottom of the right edge to prevent resealing.

Step 5 | Heat the bottom edge

Step 5 image

Heat damage may occur if excessive heat is applied — be cautious with temperatures.

  • Place a heated iOpener along the bottom edge of the back cover.
  • Allow to heat for two minutes, checking progress periodically.

Step 6 | Separate the corner adhesive

Step 6 image

Careful handling required — risk of breakage.

  • Insert a third opening pick at the bottom left corner.
  • Angle it upward, matching the curved edge.
  • Rotate the pick around the bottom left corner.

Work slowly to avoid cracking the glass in this fragile area.

Step 10 | Slice the left adhesive

Insert opening pick into left edge until it reaches the power button.

  • Stop at 5mm depth to avoid damaging the antenna flex cable or power button cable.
  • Leave the pick in place to prevent adhesive from resealing.

Step 11 | Heat the top edge

Step 11 image

Apply heat from an iOpener to the top edge of the back cover for 2 minutes.

Step 12 | Separate the corner adhesive

Step 12 image

Thumbnail 3

Insert a opening pick into the gap at the top right edge.

  • Angle the pick upward to follow the curved edge.
  • Rotate the pick around the top right corner, maintaining gentle pressure.
  • Exercise caution when navigating corners, as excessive force may crack the glass.

Step 13 | Slice the top adhesive

Step 13 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Insert the pick into the top left corner of the device and gently slice the adhesive.

Do not insert the pick more than 4 mm, as this may damage the cameras or sensors.

Leave the pick in place to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Step 14 | Separate the corner adhesive

Step 14 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2

Insert a pick into the gap at the top left edge up to 4 mm.

  • Angle the pick upward to follow the curved edge.
  • Rotate the pick around the top left corner.

Step 15 | Slice the remaining adhesive

Step 15 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
  • Insert the pick up to a maximum of 4mm to avoid damaging the cameras.
  • Slide the pick toward the bottom camera and stop just short of the power button, slicing through any remaining adhesive.

Step 16 | Remove the back cover

Step 16 image

Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Grab and remove the back cover.

If still stuck, slide an opening pick around the perimeter to separate.

  • Power on your phone and test functions before sealing.
  • Power down your phone completely before continuing.

Remove adhesive chunks with tweezers or fingers, applying heat as needed.

  • For custom-cut adhesives, follow the linked guide.
  • For double-sided tape, follow the linked guide.

Step 17 | Slice the adhesive

Step 17 image

  • The wireless charging coil is lightly attached to the battery.
  • Be careful not to strain or damage the display interconnect cable under the charging coil.

  • Insert an opening pick between the right edge of the charging coil and the battery.
  • Slide the pick along the right edge to loosen the adhesive.

Step 18 | Disconnect the NFC antenna and charging coil

Step 18 image

  • Pry and disconnect the NFC antenna press connector from the motherboard using a spudger's pointed end.
  • Repeat this process for the wireless charging coil press connector.

To re-attach, align carefully and press down on one side until it clicks, then repeat on the other. Avoid pressing in the middle, as misalignment can bend pins and cause damage.

Step 19 | Unfasten the NFC antenna and charging coil

Step 19 image

Remove the NFC antenna and charging coil's five 3.5 mm-long screws using a Phillips screwdriver.

Step 20 | Unfasten the loudspeaker

Step 20 image

Thumbnail 2

Insert spudger between speaker and frame at upper right corner.

  • Pry up to unclip loudspeaker from frame.
  • Avoid prying against battery; use frame protrusions for leverage instead.

Risk of damage if speaker is not clipped properly during reassembly.

  • Press around speaker's perimeter to clip it to the frame during reassembly.

Step 22 | Remove the charging coil and loudspeaker assembly

Step 22 image
