Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra Rear Camera Replacement

This guide is for replacing the rear camera on a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra (SM-G998B/DS). Models other than this one may have an additional antenna cable in the midframe.

  • If you're not replacing the screen, removing interconnect cables will make later steps easier.

Not reattaching adhesive seals when reassembling can compromise water protection.

Step 1 | Heat the back cover

Step 1 image

Unplug your phone and power it off before starting.

  • iOpener: Apply for at least 3 minutes to loosen adhesive underneath the back cover.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun or hot plate but be cautious not to overheat: display & internal battery are susceptible to damage.

Step 2 | Insert an opening pick

Step 2 image

Thumbnail 3

Secure a suction handle to the bottom edge of the back cover, as close to the edge as possible.

  • If the back cover is badly cracked, apply a layer of clear packing tape to facilitate suction.
  • Use a strong adhesive instead of the suction cup if necessary.

Avoid overusing superglue; it may damage surrounding components.

  • Lift the back cover with the suction handle, creating a small gap between the cover and frame.
  • If the adhesive resists separation, apply more heat, following the iOpener instructions to avoid overheating.

Insert an opening pick into the created gap.

  • Slide the opening pick towards the bottom left corner to slice the adhesive.
  • Leave the opening pick in place to prevent resealing of the adhesive.

Step 3 | Slice the adhesive

Step 3 image

  • Insert a second opening pick into the bottom edge of your phone.
  • Slide this new opening pick along the bottom edge and into the right corner to cut through the adhesive.
  • Leave all opening picks in place to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Step 4

Adhesive may harden during use.

  • Reheat the adhesive with the iOpener for two to three minutes.
  • Insert a third opening pick at the bottom right corner of your phone.
  • Slide this pick along the right edge to cut the adhesive.
  • Leave the pick in place to keep the adhesive open.

Step 5

Step 5 image

When cutting near the camera, use only 4-5mm of the pick's tip.

  • Insert a fourth opening pick under the top right phone corner.
  • Slide the pick along the top edge to cut adhesive.
  • Leave it in the top left corner to prevent resealing.

Damage or smearing near the camera is possible if not careful.

Step 6

Remove any adhesive chunks with a pair of tweezers or your fingers.

  • Use high concentration (over 90%) isopropyl alcohol to wipe away adhesive residue.
  • If using custom-cut adhesives, follow the corresponding guide.
  • If using double-sided tape, follow the corresponding guide.
