Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra Battery Replacement

If your battery is swollen, take appropriate precautions.

  • Battery is worn-out or dead: proceed with this guide for replacement.
  • Discharge battery below 25% before disassembling to reduce thermal event risk during repair.
  • Replace adhesive seals when reassembling to maintain water protection (normal function may be affected otherwise).

Do not proceed without proper precautions if the battery is swollen or damaged.

Step 1 | Heat the back cover

Step 1 image

Ensure the phone is disconnected from power.

  • Heat the back cover with an iOpener for at least three minutes or use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate cautiously, taking care not to overheat the device and risk damage to the display or internal battery.

Step 2 | Insert an opening pick

Step 2 image

Thumbnail 3

Secure a suction handle to the bottom edge of the back cover, as close to the edge as possible.

  • If the back cover is badly cracked, cover it with clear packing tape for better suction adherence.
  • Lift the back cover with the suction handle to create a small gap between the cover and frame.

Apply more heat if you have trouble creating a gap, but follow iOpener instructions to avoid overheating.

  • Insert an opening pick into the created gap.
  • Slide the opening pick to the bottom left corner to slice the adhesive.

Leave the opening pick in place to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Step 3 | Slice the adhesive

Step 3 image

  • Insert a new opening pick along the bottom edge of your phone.
  • Slide this second opening pick towards the bottom right corner, slicing through the adhesive.
  • Leave both opening picks in place to prevent resealing.

Step 4

Cool adhesive may require reheating before cutting.

  • Reheat the adhesive with an iOpener for 2-3 minutes if it becomes hard to cut.
  • Insert a third opening pick at the bottom right corner of your phone.
  • Slide the opening pick along the right edge to slice the adhesive.
  • Leave the opening pick in the top right corner to prevent resealing.

Step 5

Step 5 image

Insert only the tip (~ 4-5 mm) of an opening pick when slicing near the camera assembly to avoid damage.

  • Place a fourth opening pick under the top right corner of your phone.
  • Slide the opening pick along the top edge to separate the adhesive.
  • Leave the opening pick in the top left corner to prevent resealing.

Step 6

Insert a 5th opening pick under the top left corner.

  • Slide it along the left edge to slice remaining adhesive.
  • Near the power button, only insert ~3-4 mm of the pick tip to avoid damaging the power and volume button flex cable.

Step 7 | Remove the back cover

Step 7 image

Thumbnail 2

Remove the back cover.

  • Power on your phone and test all functions before sealing.
  • Be sure to power it down completely before proceeding.

  • Remove any adhesive chunks with a pair of tweezers or your fingers.
  • Wipe away adhesive residue using high concentration (over 90%) isopropyl alcohol.
    • For custom-cut adhesives, follow the separate guide for reassembly.
    • For double-sided tape, follow the separate guide for reassembly.

Step 8 | Slice the adhesive

Insert a opening pick at the bottom end of the NFC antenna and charging coil assembly.

  • Slide the pick along the bottom of the assembly, being careful not to touch the loudspeaker.
  • The assembly should separate from the loudspeaker as you slide the pick into place.

Step 10 | Disconnect the charging coil

Step 10 image

Disconnect the NFC antenna by gently prying the connector straight up with a spudger.

Step 12 | Unfasten the NFC antenna & charging coil assembly screws

Step 12 image

Remove the NFC antenna and charging coil assembly's retaining screws using a Phillips screwdriver.

  • The screws are located at each corner of the assembly, each being 3.9 mm long.
  • There are five screws in total.

Insert spudger into the gap between top edge of loudspeaker assembly and midframe.

  • Pry up loudspeaker assembly by tilting it downwards using the spudger.

Step 17 | Remove the loudspeaker assembly

Step 17 image

Disconnect and remove the loudspeaker assembly.

When reinstalling, clean areas thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher) before applying new adhesive as needed.

Step 18 | Disconnect the display flex cable

Step 18 image

Thumbnail 2

Check if you need to remove the motherboard or replace the battery before proceeding.

  • Use a spudger to disconnect the display flex cable by prying straight up from its socket.

Step 19 | Disconnect the main & interconnect flex cables

Step 19 image

Disconnect the interconnect flex cable from the daughterboard using a spudger.

  • Pry the bottom connector straight up from its socket.

Be careful not to damage the interconnect flex cable or its connectors.

  • Remove the interconnect flex cable using your fingers or a pair of tweezers.

Thumbnail 2

Do not fold the cable sharply as this can cause damage.

Fold the display flex cable towards the charging port for access to the battery.

Use a small piece of tape to temporarily secure the cable if needed, to avoid accidental damage during battery removal.

Step 24 | Apply adhesive remover

Step 24 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Using high concentration (over 90%) isopropyl alcohol alone may not be sufficient, as the battery adhesive can be very strong.

  • Try combining heat with isopropyl alcohol: prepare an iOpener and apply it to the screen for at least two minutes.
  • Apply 1-2 drops of high concentration (over 90%) isopropyl alcohol to gaps between frame and battery edges, focusing on left and right sides.
  • Do not over-saturate with isopropyl alcohol - it may seep into cutouts and damage the screen or loosen its adhesive.

Allow isopropyl alcohol to penetrate for at least two to three minutes before reassessing the battery's removal.

Step 25 | Insert an opening pick

Step 25 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Insert the opening pick into the wider midframe-battery gap for more space and leverage.

  • Secure a suction handle to the battery, as close to the battery edge as possible, to avoid damaging the display.

  • Insert an opening pick into the gap between the battery edge and frame.
  • Rotate the opening pick to insert its long edge into the gap.

Step 26 | Pry up the battery

Step 26 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Be cautious not to puncture or bend the battery, as this may cause chemical leaks or thermal events.

  • Apply additional isopropyl alcohol if struggling to remove the battery.
  • Pull up on the suction handle with firm pressure and tilt the opening pick downwards to pry up the battery.

If using a standard suction cup, try switching to a heavy-duty suction cup for better grip.

Step 27 | Remove the battery

Step 27 image
Thumbnail 1
Thumbnail 2
Thumbnail 3

Remove the battery, taking care to peel off any remaining adhesive.

Wait at least 10 minutes if using isopropyl alcohol for the old adhesive to completely evaporate before installing a new battery.

Never reinstall a damaged or deformed battery, as this can pose a significant safety risk.

  • Secure the new battery with pre-cut adhesive or double-sided tape during reassembly.
  • To position it correctly, apply the new adhesive where the old one was located, not directly on the battery itself.
  • Press the battery firmly into place.
  • Temporarily reconnect the battery to the motherboard to aid alignment. Disconnect it after seating.
