Samsung Galaxy S21 Back Cover Replacement

Note that removing the back cover may compromise water resistance and void the IP rating of your Samsung Galaxy S21.

  • Use this guide to remove or replace the back cover.

Important: Apply new adhesive carefully to maintain any remaining water resistance.

Step 1 | Heat the bottom edge

Completely power off your device before starting.

Do not proceed until it is fully powered down.

  • Apply heat to the bottom edge of the phone using an iOpener for two minutes.
  • Alternatively, use a hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate, but avoid overheating and note that the display, internal battery, and plastic back cover are prone to heat damage.

Step 2 | Separate the bottom adhesive

Apply a suction cup to the back of the phone, near the bottom center.

  • Pull up on the suction cup with strong force to create a gap between the cover and frame.

Depending on your phone's age, this may be challenging. Apply more heat if necessary and try again.

Insert an opening pick into the gap, but only 5 mm deep to avoid damaging internal components.

Step 3 | Slice the bottom adhesive

Slide the pick back and forth along the bottom edge to slice through the adhesive.

Leave the pick in place to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Step 4 | Heat the left edge

Heat the iOpener and apply it to the left edge of the back cover for 2 minutes.

Step 5 | Separate the left adhesive

Apply a suction cup to the phone's back near the center of the left edge.

Use strong, steady force when pulling up on the suction cup.

  • Create a gap between the back cover and frame by carefully lifting with the suction cup.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap, but limit its depth to no more than 5 mm.

Do not cut past the camera shell area, risk of cracking the plastic.

  • Slide a pick along the left edge towards the bottom left corner to separate the adhesive.
  • Leave the pick in place after cutting to prevent resealing.

Step 7 | Heat the right edge

Apply a iOpener to the right edge of the back cover and heat for 2 minutes.

Step 8 | Separate the right adhesive

Apply a suction cup to the back of the phone, near the center of the right edge.

  • Pull up on the suction cup with strong, steady force to create a gap between the back cover and frame.
  • up to 3 mm to avoid damaging the secondary interconnect cable.

Insert an opening pick at the right edge of the device.

  • Slide the pick along the right edge, back and forth, to cut the adhesive.
  • Leave the pick in place to prevent resealing of the adhesive.

Step 10 | Separate the corner adhesive

Insert the right-edge opening pick into the top-right corner of the phone and rotate it.

Only insert the pick up to 5 mm deep to avoid damaging internal components.

  • This procedure can be applied to each corner, except the top-left where the rear-facing camera is located.

Step 11 | Reposition the opening picks

Position the top-most opening pick near the camera lens.

  • Slide it as close as possible to the shell of the device.
  • Move on to the left-edge pick and repeat this process.

Step 12 | Heat the camera shell

Heat an iOpener and apply it to the camera shell for two minutes.

  • Note: There is additional adhesive to the right of the camera that must be cut through.
  • When using a pick near the phone's flash, angle the tool downward to avoid damaging the surrounding plate on the back cover.

Step 13 | Separate the camera shell adhesive

Rotate the back cover counterclockwise to create a gap between the camera shell and frame.

  • 5 mm to avoid scratching the camera.
  • Insert an opening pick in the gap created.

If this method doesn't work, proceed to the next step for an alternative method. Otherwise, skip it.

Insert an opening pick between the camera shell and the frame to separate the adhesive.

Be prepared for multiple rounds of heating, as a significant amount of adhesive holds the in place.

Align the opening pick's tip with your phone's flash.

  • Insert the pick slowly, being careful not to touch the flash's plate.
  • The plate's resistance may feel similar to adhesive; angle the pick downward to prevent slipping.
  • Slice the adhesive to the right of the camera.

Step 16 | Remove the back cover

Remove the back cover.

If it's still stuck, slide a pick around the edges to separate.

  • During reassembly: power on your phone and test all functions before sealing.
  • Power down completely before continuing work.

  • Remove adhesive chunks with tweezers or fingers; apply heat if needed for separation.

If using custom-cut adhesives, follow the respective guide.

If using double-sided tape, refer to its specific reassembly instructions.
