Step 1 | Battery is Dead

Step 1 image

Check if phone is off and battery dead.

  • Charge phone for at least 20 minutes using a known functional charger.
  • Test charger with another USB-C device to ensure power transmission.

If still not turning on, check if USB-C port is malfunctioning.

  • If available, try wireless charging to bypass faulty port.
  • Clean the USB-C port using a toothpick and isopropyl alcohol or compressed air.

If issue persists, perform force restart with charger connected:

  • Press and hold Volume Down button and Power/Bixby button for 15 seconds.
  • Check if touch screen issue still occurs after restarting.

Step 2 | Firmware Malfunction

Temporary files, system glitches, or background processes may cause screen issues.

  • Press and hold Volume Down and Power/Bixby for 15 seconds to force restart.
  • Release both buttons when the phone starts back up. Check if issue persists.

Be cautious before attempting a factory reset, as it will erase all data and apps.

  • Hold down Power/Bixby and Volume Down to turn off your phone.
  • Release buttons when the Android logo appears. Select Recovery mode.
  • Navigate menu using Volume Down. Highlight 'Wipe data/factory reset.'
  • Select 'Wipe data/factory reset' using Power/Bixby. Confirm by selecting Yes with Volume Down.
  • Press Power/Bixby to clear phone data.

Lithium-ion batteries degrade quickly after 400-500 charge cycles.

  • Notice reduced capacity and longer charging times at around 1.5 years, or 50-60% capacity.
  • Prolonged storage at extreme charge levels (full discharge or full charge) can cause rapid degradation.

A faulty battery may prevent the phone from turning on.

  • If both the battery and USB-C port are malfunctioning, power may not reach the phone.
  • Try wireless charging to test if the issue is with the battery or other components.

A swelling battery can cause serious damage to internal components.

  • Check for bulging after removing any cases and inspecting the phone's physical appearance.
  • Replace the battery immediately if you notice significant swelling, using a guide like the Samsung Galaxy S20 Battery Replacement guide.

When handling swollen batteries, exercise extreme caution to avoid chemical leakage or combustion.

Dispose of the swollen battery properly and do not throw it in the trash.

A faulty motherboard may prevent the phone from functioning altogether.

  • Check for water damage or signs of corrosion on the motherboard, which can cause short circuits and corrosion.
  • If you see localized corrosion, clean it off with 99% isopropyl alcohol to potentially regain functionality.
  • Be cautious when changing BIOS settings, as incorrect changes can brick the motherboard irreversibly.

If the motherboard is bricked, replacement may be necessary; consider using our S20 motherboard replacement guides:
