Samsung Galaxy S20 Back Cover Replacement

Your device will lose its IP (Ingress Protection) rating and may compromise water resistance if not properly sealed afterward.

  • Follow this guide for glass back cover removal or internal access on the Samsung Galaxy S20.
  • Reapplying adhesive is crucial to maintain some water resistance, but it will not restore the original IP rating.

Step 1 | Heat the bottom edge

Step 1 image

Unplug and power off your phone.

Use a heat source (iOpener, hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate) on the back cover's bottom edge for 2 minutes, but avoid overheating, which can damage the display or internal battery.

Step 2 | Separate the bottom edge adhesive

Applying excessive force may crack the back cover glass.

  • Attach a suction cup to the phone's back near the center of the bottom edge.
  • If your screen is badly cracked, apply clear packing tape for better adhesion.
  • Pull the suction cup with strong force to create a gap between the cover and frame.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap.

Reheating with the iOpener may be necessary due to tight tolerances. Multiple attempts may be required.

  • If creating a gap is difficult, apply more heat and try again.
  • Avoid applying excessive force with the pick to prevent back cover damage.

Step 3

Risk of cracking the glass panel if the adhesive is cut near its curved edges.

  • Slide a pick along the bottom edge, moving it back and forth to cut through the adhesive.
  • Avoid cutting near corners where the glass is curved.
  • Leave the pick in place to prevent resealing of the adhesive.

Step 4 | Heat the left edge

Step 4 image

Heat a iOpener and apply it to the left edge of the back cover for 2 minutes.

Step 5 | Separate the left edge adhesive

Apply a suction cup to the phone's left edge, as close to center as possible.

  • Pull on the suction cup with strong, steady force to create a gap between the back cover and frame.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap, ensuring only the tip is under the glass edge.

Due to tight tolerances, this may take multiple attempts. Be cautious of applying excessive force with the pick, as it may crack the back cover glass.

As a last resort, apply heat and try again or use isopropyl alcohol in high concentration (over 90%) to loosen adhesive.

Step 6

Slide the pick downwards while keeping it under the glass edge.

  • Continue to push the pick until the adhesive seal breaks free.

Step 7

Slide the pick along the left edge of the phone to separate the back cover's adhesive.

  • Be cautious when sliding across the ridge in the frame surrounding the volume and power buttons, as cracking may occur due to the glass cutout.
  • Leave the pick under the left edge of the glass near the top left corner to prevent resealing.

Step 8 | Heat the right edge

Step 8 image

Apply a heated iOpener to the right edge of the back cover for 2 minutes.

  • A hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate may be used as alternatives.
  • Beware not to overheat the phone: display and internal battery are susceptible to damage.

Step 9 | Separate the right edge adhesive

Apply a suction cup near the center of the right edge.

  • Pull on the suction cup with strong, steady force to create a gap between the back cover and frame.
  • Insert an opening pick into the gap.
  • Tilt the opening pick downward for full insertion underneath the back cover.

Step 10

Insert a pick along the right phone edge, separating adhesive.

  • Leave pick under glass near top to prevent resealing.
  • If other picks fall free, set aside and continue with bottom edge.

Step 11 | Heat the top edge

Step 11 image

Use a heated iOpener on the top edge of the back cover for 2 minutes.

Step 12 | Separate the top edge adhesive

Step 12 image

The curved glass near the corners of the back cover is prone to cracking.

  • Slide a pick from the right edge of the device around the top right corner.
  • Continue slicing along the top edge to the top left corner, separating the adhesive completely.
  • If the process becomes difficult, stop and reapply heat before continuing.

Step 13 | Remove the back cover

Separate the back cover by lifting it slowly and using opening picks to break remaining adhesive.

  • Remove the back cover once separated.
  • During reassembly:
    • Power on your phone to test functions, then turn it off completely before proceeding.
    • Use tweezers or fingers to remove adhesive chunks. Apply heat if necessary for separation.
    • If using custom-cut adhesives, follow separate guidelines.
    • If using double-sided tape, refer to dedicated instructions.
